CB550 front end on a cb500?
« on: July 09, 2006, 12:01:51 PM »
Will a '78 cb550 front end -triple tree, steering head, and fork system work on my '71 cb500 ?  Will the steering stem fit into my frame, will it modify the ride ht. or handling on the bike?  Mount my same wheel, caliper, fender...

any ideas how I can find this out on a sunday.

Some one has all the gear I need on ebay and i found my self tearing down my entire front end yesterday- one problem leading to another...

Far as I know, they are the same. As far as fitting, you can put the SOHC750 forks complete on a 500/550 too. There might be some difference with the 750 but, I don't see how the 550 onto the 500 would make a difference. Need some more experienced input here! If I'm right, basically , the 550 is an improved and slightly enlarged (engine displacement wise) and improved in the clutch area too. Don't know if that helps. Later on, Bill

I am using a late model (can't remember the year)  550 front end on my 73 500.
I am just using the fork tubes and sliders with my
original tree and that is a perfect fit, so I would
guess the trees are the same.
Generally most 500 frame parts are swappable
with 550 parts.

lots 'o luck pal!
