Hey Y'all,

I'm the latest newbee. I've owned a 71, 78, 80 all 750's and almost forgot a 350sl (i think it was a 73).

Anyway, I always liked the 71 750 and wish more than ever I'd held on to it (especially when checking what they
go for on ebay). I sorta finally settled on 77 750F I found nearby and now I'm having idle problems.
I do like the old F and want to set it up like a vintage cafe bike.

I've set the points and put in plugs but still idles about 2000 + rpms. I took the carbs off and took the bowls off and
cleaned the innards with 2+2 but all really looked clean. Put them back on and tried the fuel screws.
Set all at 1 turn out and then tried to adjust, number 1 would start a miss if I screwed it all the way in and
shut fuel off which means it's working I suppose. #4 wouldn't shut the fuel off so that is where I stopped.
Feels real strong down the road I should add.

Any pointers on the idle prob will be greatly appreciated.

Also, are there any links out there to good 77F pictures. I want to paint it too. I'm sorta leaning toward the Dantona special
that is in the article.

Thanks and hope y'all don't run me off.

Robert

Sounds like the carbs themselves are okay, but just not closing enough. This is probably a dumb question, I know, but have you tried adjusting the idle stop and/or the linkage at all?

If so, then maybe some or all of the carbs' slides are out of synch? You'll have to pull the rack and adjust the individual linkages so the slides can bottom out and open at the same time. Then do a real synch on the bike and dial in the linkage.

HTH (but I doubt it...)

Check the head pipe temps at or near idle.  If you have a colder one, that cylinder's carb probably has a slow jet plugged and the idle mixture screw will then be ineffective.  Your carbs have pressed in slow jets.  Wrap with leather, grab with pliers and yank them out to clean.  Once you can see light through them, tap them back into place.

The Cafe "look" usually means pods filters.  Fortunately, the 77 should have adjustable throttle valve needles for re-tuning the carbs.  Slow jets are harder to come by. And, you may have to convert the carbs to use the screw in style.

Sorry that this isn't for the 77' specifically, (or even the 750 for a small portion), but if you want some pictures of some cafe'd sohc bikes (mostly 750s) then this is the right place. The stuff Carpy builds is pretty radical unless you plan on rebuilding the entire bike from the ground up as well as pretty heavy customizations. However, there is a section for "readers rides" that has a very nice selection along with short descriptions. Carpy is a member here in the forum too (just thought i'd throw that in).

Anyway welcome to the forum! cheers;

Thanks y'all,

The carb syncs was the problem, I adjusted them all down all the way and fired her up and
she idles pretty good now. I'm hunting for some pods now.
Has anyony used the rubber velocity stacks from the air box and hooked a pod on the
end of it with a bracket formed to bolt to the original airbox point?

The cafe pics were great!
