Relays and testing on an f'in Virago
« on: November 20, 2012, 05:43:41 AM »
Picked up an 82 Virago 920 a while back.    Under 10k original miles and really clean.   Electrical and everything else original and unmolested.

Can't get this dang thing to fire.   No kickstart so it's electric only.   The problem:  relays for everything.    Starter tests good, clutch safety switch tests good, sidestand switch tests good.  The solenoid for the starter tests good - however when testing, the click that it makes is not instantaneous - it clicks, but it is not what I'd call immediate.   The battery is new, fully charged and holds just under 13 volts.

Just how much noise should a relay make and how quickly should it make it ?

There are relays for the sidestand, clutch, neutral, starter and starter shut-off circuit.    I'm about to yank them all out, but this thing is so un-touched
I feel I need to leave it alone.

After I get this thing fired, does anyone want a clean 1982 Yamaha XV920 Virago ?
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

there is a way to HOTWIRE to get it to FIRE! IF the starter spins the motor!!!

You should have on your coils wires from the eletronic ignition modules and system power. Trace these wires to find out which ones are +power from ignition switch/power system. On HONDAS the power to coils wire is black with a white stripe. Splice in a wire from hot wire on the coils directly back to + post on battery, a little spray of starter fluid and hit the starter button. You can also use this method to check if ignitors are firing. Check by pulling a plug wire and put a spare plug in it and lay it on the head/hit starter button and you should get a good spark!!!

Have you checked power at the KILL switch?? Sometimes they will crap out and not allow current to flow!!!

I know that the 750 Viragos have a ignition module box mounted under the seat almost on the rear fender, if that mod. has gone out ,you are dead in the water till you can get a KNOWN GOOD one..

Hope this helps!!!
