Carb cleaning, nil in FAQs
« on: November 02, 2012, 04:46:00 PM »
I cracked open a rack of four yesterday and it is so green in there I am tempted to put the lawn mower through them.
I'm looking for a way to degunk the brass bits, any suggestions?
Most things suggested on here are USA specific so need a generic fix.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Get some Honda Combustion Chamber Cleaner or some generic cleaner, put all your brass bits in the float bowls, fill the float bowls with the cleaner and leave over night. Works well for mine. Cheers, Cliff.

Brasso?  ;D
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

A good long soak in ammonia does a number on the greem patina usually. It brightens up pennies pretty good, too.

OK I've got ammonia (Janola) so will give that a go, Lester you clown I'll give you brasso!
Not sure if we have Pinesol here in NZ, I'll check, just did the Soda Blasting trick on the carb outers and the motor, that actually works!

Before trying the ammonia, give them a wash in acetone to remove the old fuel varnish and allow the ammonia to work on the corrosion properly, don't leave them in the ammonia for too long though.

BC, did you cook them in pinesol  or soak them cold? Was it the  Yellow, new blue springtime fresh or the old faithful evergreen kind? I've cooked my carbs in simple green , they get clean , but not shinny fresh looking, does pinesol make em shine? would like new recipe for carb soup. Thanks RB

Two big bottles of pine sol in a pot and filled with water to cover. I used lemon PineSol. But I think the regular would work too. I've boiled carbs in lemon juice and that worked too, but the pine sol seemed to dissolve the old gas without much effort. Left one set in there for a week! Going to filter the current batch and see about using it again.

Scrubbed with a tooth brush and they came out pretty clean. Pretty shinny where the carbs were in good shape.

Found a brilliant solution, bought a jewellery cleaner thing that fires tiny bubbles of air/water into them, safe for rubber and plastics too so no need to totally strip them. Had to break the 4 carbs rack down to 2 carbs sets to fit it in tank but results are brilliant.
Gets into all the little airway passages etc.
