What's Your Best Story of being stupid on your Bike?
« on: December 05, 2012, 07:13:47 AM »
Here is one of my stories:

I was 16 and it was the last day of summer before my junior year of High school started.  I had now owned my Honda CB350 for most of the summer and would now be considered an expert rider.  Considered an expert rider by me anyway.  The bike was running perfectly as I was headed home from getting my haircut.  As I was cruising down Lincoln Street in Worcester Mass I noticed that my cousin was sitting at the bus stop waiting for a ride home.  At this point I think it is important to tell you that because I am a 16 year old, badass biker, my 350 is equipped with straight pipes.  I mean come on what could sound meaner or more impressive than a 350 Honda with no baffles?

As I am riding by my cousin, I pull in the clutch and rev the motor.  I do this to impress him and everyone else within a mile or so.  Seriously how could they not be impressed?  I am 16 years old, my golden locks are flowing out of my helmet, I have my best pair of skin tight (it’s the 80s) Levi red tag dungarees and a black concert T shirt on.  If that is not impressive then Joe Dirt is not a stud.
Side note:  For those of you not old enough to know this, dungarees are what people called “jeans” back in the day when you wore your underwear UNDER your jeans.

So as I am feeling like a rock star and my bike is making more noise than a 13 year old girl at a Justin Beiber concert, I let the clutch out.  In a normal situation this would not be any big deal but today is not my day and this is not a normal situation.  As it turns out, dumping your clutch while coasting down a hill, pulling 7000 RPMs and being in the middle of a patch of oil tend to add up to something bad about to happen.  Just like that I go from hero to zero.  Yes I know I was only a hero in my own head but this is my story and not yours so like I said, hero to zero.

In one swift move the bike flips out from under me, slams me to the ground, pins my leg under the bike and the bike and I do our best impersonation of a slip and slide all the way through the intersection.  When I come to a stop I look over and my cousin is bent over laughing as are all the other people at the bus stop.  I pull myself out from under the bike and by some miracle I don’t have a single scratch on me.  My best Levi’s have a few holes in them but no holes in my skin.  The bike is another story.  The bars are bent up, a mirror is gone and the forks no longer point forward.  So much for taking the bike to school tomorrow.  I end up pushing the bike about 2 ½ miles home which is no easy task considering the shape the front end is in.  On the long push home, reality sets in.  I am not a rock star.  I am not a hero and I’m in no way cool.  I’m a dork that has to walk to school in the morning.

Soon the bike is fixed and I am back to being a hero in my own eyes.  For a poor kid that grew up in a crappy neighborhood I felt like a millionaire every time I rode that bike to school.   A lot of kids had cars but very few had bikes and that felt pretty darn cool.

Stand back everyone and watch a retard kick start a bike in gear straight into the ground. One scoop fell off the cone.....

Then there was that time I had to do 100mph on a new to me cb550 that I found out was missing an axle nut later ...... wondering why it was handling funny.

Then the absolute worse was taking a sidecar rig out for the first time with a pregnant woman in the sidecar and accidentally "flying the car" on a tight right turn . She thought it was awesome , like i did it on pupose. I thought ,she is lucky to be alive....

Oh the things we learn. God must have a fondness for idiots or at least me  :)

I hung with a Honda 919 for a while around 100 mph on my 550 with tires that shouldn't have even dreamed of being on the road.

Road my 78 CB750F from St Louis to Carthage, IL (hometown)...about 175miles give or take with a BADLY slipping clutch. How badly you ask? So bad that 70mph was between 7-9k RPM. When I took it apart to replace the clutch plates...there were 4 that had less than 10% of the friction plating left on them. Dropped the pan at the same time and wouldn't you know it...THERE'S MY FRICTION PLATING!!
You CAN do great things...with enough beer.

The year was 1976 had just bought a used but in like new condition 76 CB550. This was the last sohc4 Honda I would have until 2009 when I bought my 750K6. My friend had 1966 Dodge Charger with a 383 and was talking junk about how much faster it was than my 550. Well being 19 and thinking I would live forever of course we had to find out.

How about "being stupid UNDER your bike". It was in 1980, i was going to work a 6 am on my first 750/4, it was a K1 with an 850 kit and didn't like cold starts in the morning, especially in winter, so it was easier to kick it than stress the battery. I got ready for the ride to work and put on my old motocross boots {i was 17  8)} and went down to kick the bike over, well the motocross boots had a split in the sole from the steel  foot pegs on my mates YZ125, anyway, i kicked the bike and on the first attempt the head of the kick start lever went straight through the bottom of my boot, the bike went down on the right side with my foot still part of the kick starter, ever tried to lift a bike off your self while you are actually stuck under it..?  Not much fun, thank god the bike was cold as i was stuck well. Well for the first 30 minutes or so i was not a happy camper, by the time my Dad got up at 7am i was starting to see the funny side of things, he just stood on the front porch shaking his head and said, "i told you motorbikes were no good for you"  He was kidding, i asked him if he was enjoying this at all and he said, " the coffee seems to taste just a little bit better this morning, could be some thing to do with the view"  we both laughed and he came down and lifted the bike off me..... ;D :o

Yes, as a matter of fact, I have; remember the "split your cases" thread, about the transmission snap-rings? ;D
The stupidest thing I ever did on a bike was to try to negotiate the parking lot of a large bar, while standing on the shoulders of Bud, who was piloting the cb350F we were on. We made it halfway around, but coming out of the corner, the bike lurched a bit, and I fell off the back, landing flat on my back, with my left elbow taking the most damage in the form of severe road rash. The young lady I was trying to impress wasn't much impressed, at least not in a positive way..

Rode my Road King to Sturgis, S.D. from Nebraska(2000 mile trip)last year with a practically bald rear tire when I left, and a totally bald tire when I got home. Cord wasn't showing yet, tho. It was either buy a new tire(white wall tires are expensive!), or have gas money for the trip. I took the trip.

Hows about just being stupid? Years ago I put together a pretty wicked 5hp briggs go-cart for my boys and we used to ride it at my brother in-laws place where he had a big oval track in the field. One of my bro inlaws took off on one go kart, the other bro inlaw took off chasing him in his S10 pick up and I took off chasing the truck in our go kart. Near one of the turns my bro inlaw had a dog chained up to a large post and in order to maintain corner speed I was taking that turn wide which meant going between the post and the dog running over the chain it was chained to. This worked just fine for about 3 laps until the dog became thoroughly unimpressed with my driving skills and pulled the chain tight on the 4th lap. Thankfully it wasn't a very big dog or the chain would've taken my head off but it was big enough to pull the chain just high enough to clear the front tires, go up my legs and over my knees clearing the steering wheel then wrap around my waist. Keep in mind I was doing a good 25 to 30 mph so this process happened within a split second bringing me and the go kart to a VERY immediate and abrupt stop. The dog ended up just fine though it did take a beating because I remember it literally being snapped off its feet starting on the left side of me getting whipped across to my right from the momentum of the go kart. Me and the go kart though got beat up pretty bad though. The stop was so abrupt that it bent/twisted the frame of the go kart which was made of pipe rather than thin wall tubing, broke the fly wheel of the briggs, almost dislocated my hip and bruised a bunch of ribs. I was thoroughly sore for a week and a half

When I was in High School (many years ago) I rode my cb160 to school and when we got ready to leave in the afternoon I had to ge in the line of traffic (busses) waiting to turn on the main hiway. There was a empty pasture to the side of the road so I decided to rip across the pasture to get ahead of the bus line up. Here I am ripping about 30 down this path and lo and behold , the pasture had a ditch about 4 foot deep and 5 foot across which is where I ended up. The bike survived for another day with slight repairs but I bit through my lip and by the time I got home ,I looked like someone had cut my throat from all the blood.

At 16 I sideswiped a limo on my XS1100 because the legs coming out of those short shorts REALLY caught my attention.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

I mixed up the clutch and brake cables and put them to the wrong levers....then tried to go for a ride anyway. It is hard to do clutch and throttle with the same hand.

Still had my 1971 SL175 and it was 1973 had just got my DL. Running across a open field 35 or 40 mph and the back tire caught a exposed tree root I didn't see. Back end shot up I went over the bars, end result-front fender bent double, ripped heel off one of my 70's dress boots, and destroyed my clear snap on helmet shield. But the the worst thing was the shifter shaft was rung completely off flush with case. Had to ride the 20 miles or so back home stuck in 3rd gear.

There was this 5 acre hay field on the side of a steep hill that was pecked at by a local excavator and abandoned, this was were us kids learned how to ride motocross. While showing off on a stand up wheelie (possibly the longest one I ever did ) somehow I managed to fall off, I was left standing in the field pointing out to my friends who were then already laughing, that the bike never went down, all you could see of it was the chrome handlebars flying through the tops of the hay across the field,  acres away. It's been almost 40 years since then but, when I do see one of the gang, they always say, " Remember that time you were doing that wheelie?"

Brand new 1970 CB450, tried to copy a trick my dad used to do; bike on center stand, engage 1st, let out clutch and rock backwards, launching bike off the stand. I made three attempts with no forward motion. My sister was watching and said "Shouldn't you take off the lock and chain first?" Yes, I had a heavy chain run through the spokes and around the swingarm. Bust both shocks, all the rear spokes and destroyed the chain guard. Oh to be 16 again!

A few years ago I was pulling my lawn tractor out of the garage to mow the lawn and in doing so I felt something pull on the tractor and heard a crashing sound. It was a long extension cord that was running under my youngest sons vf500 interceptor and had gotten snagged on the tractor and pulled my kids bike down leaving a nice dent in the tank. Then earlier this summer I was pushing his cbr in the garage and unbeknownst to me the side stand flipped itself back up while I was pushing so when I stopped to let it back on it's side stand, it wasn't there and by the time I realized that it was too late. I laid it down gently but still enough to scratch the left side of the fairing. Luckily it was before he re-painted the bike. :)
