Whats Miami like?
« on: December 05, 2012, 08:35:36 PM »
Picked up a gig in Hollywood, Florida for three months.
Never been down there. What's the riding like?
Any words of wisdom?

Steve

Hi Steve,

My family lives in S. Florida and I have spent a considerable amount of time there. The riding will be nothing like here. The Miami Ft. Lauderdale area is very densly populated and the traffic can be horrible, especially during rush hours. The drivers are very aggressive and drive fast! (similar to Houston). Personally, I would not want to ride there.
But, if you head west out of town, you'll find some good roads but most are flat and straight, nothing like we are used to here.
Don't get me wrong, I love FL, was there this past Aug. The beaches are beautiful, people are friendly and the weather is great in the winter.
When are you headed there?

Hey Stev-o
Heading down first of Jan.
Seemed like it would just be long flat roads.
Probably just take the bicycle for the beach boardwalk.
Lime creek this weekend?

You know you only liked it because they ate the girl.

It's flat and boring, but you can ride all year long. Beware of cagers, In SoFla we are victims of what I like to call "ethnical variety". People come from all over the world to live here and they drive as they did on their country of origin. :-)
Wednesday is bike night on Hooters of Pembroke Pines (10 min ride from Hollywood), Thursday is the night at tropical Park (Palmetto & Bird rd), weekends the place is Holiday Park (off of Griffin rd & State road 27). If sightseen is your thing then you ride west into the Everglades towards Naples.
The bike crowd it's pretty friendly with the exception being the occasional Harley ahole, but for the most part great people.
Don't park your bike outside of a mall or in downtown areas, they are lightning fast to come with a van and lift it (Low Jack doesn't mean Jack here). :-)
Enjoy your stay here, there are great places to visit.

There is great bicycle riding on A1A (runs along the beach). And don't miss South Miami Beach, it's a fabulous place to visit.

For old bikes, hit Wood Tavern in Miami on thursday nights.  A bunch of us with CBs, XSs, KZs, H2s etc hang out and shoot the #$%*.  After 9pm.

If I remember correctly the high point was an overpass and the low point was the New River (?) tunnel, and traffic was a #$%*.  I found the drive to Key West interesting, but the drive back was boring as heck as you had to travel the same road.

You remember right.  We attempted to blast through the tunnel the other night...
