I started a thread on another forum for this restoration, but that will be more of a documentation thread.  Here, I feel that I can ask a lot more questions and get well informed answers.

It's finally time to pull this tired old girl out of the shed and give it some serious TLC.  I bought this bike back in the spring of 1980 when I was a senior in high school.  I rode it home...pleased as punch with a huge smile on my face.  Well, two days later, I was involved in a fairly serious accident (not on the bike..I was a passenger in a school bus) that put me in the hospital for a couple of weeks and on crutches for three months.  Undeterred,  I strapped my crutches to the back of the bike and had some of the most enjoyable riding I've ever had.  I rode this bike for nine years wracking up many thousands of miles.

So here it is in all it's glory.....well, more like neglect.  And yes, I rode this bike with that ugly fairing :)

I am planning on doing a full teardown and restore the bike as close to stock as I can...within reason.  Repro pipes are going to run $1200.00 minimum so thats going to take a huge chunk of the budget right there.  I don't even want to think what the cost of good original pipes would run.  I will be searching for good deals on good used parts that are nice, but not necessarily perfect.  I want to ride this bike a lot.....so it will get the inevitable nick and scratch anyway.

I ran across this CB750 in Italy when I was over there for work this summer.  This bike is why I brought my 750 to the front of my project que.  This is the color I plan on painting.

My wife says I have too many bikes in the garage.....I just can't understand that.  My 68 bonnie is on the lift in the upper corner of the photo.  Not in picture is my sons BSA project and the CB750.

I decided to take some time away from tear down and powder coat some of the parts.  First I had to patch a couple of holes that were drilled in the tool tray.

here are some of the bits before bead blasting...no I did not bead blast to air box, just the brackets.

The front rolling chassis is a 66 Norton Atlas for an ongoing Triton project that is on hold for the CB.  The red bike is a 72 CL350.

I figured I would powder some of this stuff early on for motivation.  It helps me keep my nose to the grindstone.  Unfortunately, I have to leave for work for ten days starting tomorrow, so things will be at a standstill for a while.

Footpegs....obviously....

And a deviation from a true restoration as the rear footpegs were not black from the factory.

Nope.  Just cleaned up and treated with Turtle Wax Formula 2001....a plastic renewal product.  The pic was there to show the brackets.

Excellent - another Wi SOHC !   Will be watching.   Good deal that you were able to store the bike after you were done riding it... so how long has it been sitting?   Do you remember what you paid for it back in 1980? ;D

The last time the bike was registered was in 1989.  If I remember right, I paid $700.00 for it.

I'm in the middle of reading through your 750 restoration.  Outstanding work!  Subscribed.

subscribed.  I have heard that peanut oil rubbed into plastic will do the same thing. I tried it on a friend's bumper and it seemed to work well but I don't know the longevity of the application...Larry

Tews.  Thanks, I will most likely be in touch soon.

Has anyone used the reproduction pipes available on eBay?  I definitely need exhaust.

Thanks,

Ed

Originals pipes are hard to come by. Even the reproduction pipes have been discontinued for now. I recently bought a 74 that had a spare set of 341s. That was the only reason I bought it. Not the 300s that I would like but they will work.

Edhaeuser.  Is the engine stuck from sitting?  You're right about Italy.  There seems to be a small but loyal CB fan base there.  I've seen all kinds there.

Tews... You said that they've been discontinued for now.  Did you hear that Honda hopes to start making them later or ...?

Oh it's what I have seen here on the site from other members. Maybe I am wrong.. I will look into it and get back to you...

I have a set of 300's that are toast... Funny part is that the headers are like brand new but the muffler rusted out... Even with the giant holes it sounded great.

The engine turns freely and actually cleaned up quite nicely with a pressure washer.  I'm not sure how far I am going to get into it at this stage.  It must have thrown a drive chain at some point before I purchased it....the sprocket cover has a hole in it.   It did not leak oil back when i was riding it, but we'll see what I find when I pull it from the frame and dig into it.
