i need new spokes
« on: January 16, 2013, 12:37:22 AM »
i need new spokes... front and rear for a 76 CB550F.... the rear spokes i could probably break by hand.. theyre pretty badly rusted, and on the front theyre about half rusted.. the rims and hubs look good though, but ill definitely need spokes

so what could i expect to pay for a set?... are the ones on ebay (i believe from thailand) any good or would i be better off buying from somewhere else?... also, im trying to determine if i should go with stainless spokes, or standard ones and possibly paint them, suggestions?

Hi Jason, I have not bought from Thailand myself, but I know of people who has bought non-original spokes. Not sure if they came from Thailand. The spokes received was not as thick as the original ones, and one got spokes who was a tiny bit too long. I would personally go for original Honda spokes. I can see them occasionally on eBay, if I recall correct about $119 for one wheel???

I got stainless steel spokes, front and back from buchanan for 220.00 plus shipping, they are plenty thick, polished and laced right up, no hassle. I am pretty cheap, so 200+ for spokes seemed CRAZY, but honestly, they are quite a bit nicer than the OEM steel ones from Honda, and the best part, no rusting. You can pick up a set over at dimecitycycles.com.
It's almost twice as old as me, I don't know how the hell it works!

Check the DCC site.  I bought a stainless set to re-lace the front hub on my 76 550K and they fit perfectly.  The set also came with a heavier duty nipple set than what was on originally and a little tube of nipple grease. Cost was about $105 USD or so, and they shipped the day I placed the order

it seems the spare wheel i have with decent spokes is a spare front wheel... so i can use some of the spokes from this wheel and have a complete set of good spokes for the front, i will just need to polish them

this means that for the rear i will definitely need new spokes... when i measure the rear wheel, i get 19" from the very edge to the very edge... now i know youre supposed to measure where the tire rests on the inside surface.... so then this 19" across the outter most portions of the rim should in fact be the proper 18" rim for this bike, right?..

previous owner originally put a CB650 com star wheel on the rear.. i wanted to go back to the classic style of the spoked wheels which is why i have to re-spoke this old rim

Did you try looking for a complete wheel on eBay or maybe someone is selling on this forum? Could end up being cheaper and easier. Might as well do the bearings too while your at it, if you havent planned to do so already.

From the limited posts I've seen on this forum...  The ebay spokes have had the chrome "flake off" during a wash by a member here, and as for the ~$250 buchanans, fitment can be screwy (huge post on that).  Neutral feedback on the vintagecb750.com sets - fitment at least is supposed to be right on.

whats the diameter of the cheap ebay spokes? are they thinner, thicker, or roughly the same?.. and i cant get the search on here to work properly, do you know of a good post relating to the buchanan spokes i could look at?... i think im good on the front spokes, i could polish them and replace a couple from a spare wheel i have, but i need a complete replacement on the rear

Use Google search on left side of page, not the top right search box.

wardenerd, the price on cb750supply looks tempting, but ive heard issues with less expensive spokes being of a smaller diameter and therefor weaker than the standard spokes... is this true? are the ones on cb750 supply thinner or the same?

I have no way to measure but mine came in a few weeks ago and look very similar in diameter to stock.

ok.. i went to measure the rim again... something doesnt seem right.. this does seem to be a proper hub, it does fit the axle, the swingarm, brake, etc... but when i measured the rim itself again, more closely it seems to be about 18.5 inches from the very edge to the very edge, 16.5 inches between the two closest inner surfaces... and from the very edge of one side to the other it measured a bit under 3 inches...

this doesnt seem right at all, i wonder if this is a CB750 rear wheel.. but it seemed to fit the swingarm and brake just fine... i guess i wont know until i cut the old rotted wheel off and measure properly

Check David Silver Spares. They have non genuine ones that I'm considering for pretty cheap. Watch for shipping. It's craziness to ship to Canada from there.

Please does anyone know of good priced spokes for cb750f1 (disc)rear wheel. I will be going for the aftermarket front  rim and spokes from david silvers as the front rim and spokes seem to be ok .
The website sells spokes for the rear k series hub are they they the same for my" f "
The rear aftermarket rim would match the front . But I have worries about the rear spokes
thanks and sorry for thead jacking
Kind regards Stew

i managed to make out the lettering on the side of the rear tire thats on there now... 120/80-18.. and it looks a bit large for the rim.. its an 18 inch rim, and measures exactly 2.5 inches across from the OUTSIDE of the edges of the rim... with the tire still on i cant tell if its 2.15 or 1.85 across the inside of the rim... perhaps someone else may know what the width is from the measurements from the outsides of the rim?

if this is in fact a CB750 rear wheel, which was included but not installed when i purchased this bike, will it even work on a CB550?... if not, maybe i could lace this rim to a CB550 hub as its a real pain in the rear end to find tires for a 1.85" rim but relatively easy for a 2.15" rim

I believe stock rim size is 1.85 x 18 for the rear on these bikes. Sounds like you have a stock wheel and you're just measuring incorrectly.

http://www.ehow.co.uk/how_7556880_measure-motorcycle-wheel-rims.html

As for the 750 spokes on a 550/500. I'm pretty sure the front spokes are fine, but the rear ones will be off.

this isnt the wheel that was installed on the bike, the one on the bike was a comstar, maybe off a CB650, possibly a later 750.. but i got a bunch of mixed spare parts with it and some are off a CB750, this extra rear wheel came with it which is why i wouldnt be suprised if it was actually a CB750 rear wheel, all i can say is it measured 2.5" from outside to outside of the rim as theres a tire still on it

if this a CB750 wheel then theres a good chance this wont really fit my bike that well, i believe the rear sprocket would be off requiring me to add spacers to the front sprocket?... i dont know... but does anyone know if its a 2.15 or 1.85 inch rim that is 2.5" across the outside?

i ordered the spokes from CB750 supply... used my calipers on the original spokes and the new ones... originals were .130" thick, and the new ones are .140" thick, so these cb750 supply spokes are actually thicker than the originals... however theyre a bit shorter, and one of the spokes for the rear is shaped a bit different... ill add a photo link below

in the photo, the top two seem to match perfectly for shape but you can see the new ones are a tad shorter... on the bottom though you can see the new spoke has a different shape than the old one... the leg of the L shape is a bit longer and i think the angle might be just slightly off... will they still work?.. keep in mind that i do in fact have a 2.15x18 rim off a CB750 that was given to me without a hub, im lacing the CB750 rim to my 550 hub so perhaps these would still match up with the new rim properly?

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8523/8453362685_277e7312a1_b.jpg - guess which ones are the new ones?
