78 Tracker Project
« on: January 25, 2013, 10:14:20 AM »
Hey guys, been lurking on here for a long time trying to decide what to do with my 78.
Initially brat style as I already have another cafe bike.  Beveldrives Urban Scrambler was huge inspiration.
I'm ditching the stock 78 tank (now on ebay) for an 81ish Suzuki GS450 tank that looks pretty cool.
Ordered a frame hoop from Dime City that is all good, but makes the seat look way too long for a brat style with the smaller tank.
Frame hoop is now for sale if anybody wants it.  Make me an offer.  It's not welded in yet.
Found a guy in Mississippi who has been absolutely awesome to work with so far that will make whatever you want out of steel.  Just can't wrap my
head around flimsy fiberglass for long term......
I'm going to go with an XR750 dirt track style seat to help get rid of some of the seat length for better proportions and lose the rear hoop.
So small tank, tracker seat, Pro Taper MX bars with the cross bar removed,  Shinko 705 dual sport tires and a Carpy 4 into 1.

So in addition to the seat stuff....
I have my motor out of my frame.  Painted it last weekend with Duplicolor engine enamel and it came out awesome with my $9.95 Chip Foose starter kit paint booth.
I'm really really torn with carting this motor to a local guy and having the pistons rings and valves checked out while it's out.
After my last cafe build that got WAY out of control, I'm trying to keep this one cash reasonable.
This is a 48,000 mile motor and every time I pull a cover off, everything looks really nice inside.
Every time I talk to a mechanic willing to work on it, I get the same answer....
Does it smoke, leak or rattle?......No.....Then leave it alone and ride it.....
Not really the answers that I was looking for.
What do you guys think?

What he said....      I don't tear into them unless you need to.  Mr. Honda made a helluva motor.

On another note - Can't wait to see this one finished.   I like the GS450 tank that you have on it - the shape is just about dead-on for that look.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.
