Not sure what you should soak them with ... possibly some penetrating oil ... some type of solvent? The rings are probably just stuck in there with burnt on/caked on oil/crud.

Do you plan to replace the rings? If so I'm sure you can get them out with some force... ie break them.

Yeah I plan on replacing the rings and doing a hone. I was gonna go the destruction route :D lol but i dont want to damage the pistons. I do have a lot of purple power and then a bunch of vinegar thanks to your thread, probably gonna leave them in for a spell and see what happens. . .

oh and i do have some pb blaster laying around maybe that would do the trick.

Hey guys sorry for the lack of updates but going to school for engineering and working 40 hours a week kinda makes me busier some weeks then others.

I'm stuck at the cases on the engine until my clutch nut tool comes in and with that i started on the carbs

Went ahead and did the pine sol soak got the caps off but not the bowls those suckers are STUCK!

They've been soaking for a day now hopefully the bowls give way. . . .

Yeah i've seen some advice on not powder coating beacause of the thickness but i'd figure with paint it would be about the same. I've heard of hot rod engines being coated just wanted some of your thoughts, and i just figured duplicolor cause my experience with VHT wasn't good.

I've looked into this and "yes", you can powdercoat the engine. Harley do it and so do others. I spoke to a guy here in Brisbane that does custom power coating and he told me that he does it all the time and that there are lots of different types of powder these days, in saying that, make sure that it is a thin modern powder and not the thick early types of powder used mainly in industrial applications....

This is the guy ...

Thanks retro! Glad to see you have some good info and Yeah I'll be using eastwood's powder and the bike will have an oil cooler to help. I don't think it will matter too much though.

I used to do a lot of powder coating in the 1980's, even tested new powders for Dulux in Sydney, things have come a long way since then, it also helps having some insight when talking to people about powder coating...  The thick stuff i used would be like putting a blanket on your engine, retaining heat so i understand some peoples concerns.... ;)

Yes the insight is great especially when there's so many different views on the subject

On a different note more things are stuck on my bike lol I gave up on the carbs I'm gonna send them off to be rebuilt. And of course the infamous cases will not split and during the process of removing the bolts I rounded a head  :-[

Even with soaking in pb blaster and using a really big breaker bar I rounded the bolt. So today I will go and grab a socket set to get her off

Until next time lads!!!

Don't forget that having someone powder coat your engine will cost a good bit of coin. I think it's a good option if you can get a reasonable deal on it.

Hey lads got a bit of a mini mini update :)

I got my front end in today and also did a bit of cleaning on the carbs.

They look 1000 times better seeing as this was the before

And just a couple shots of the forks they look 100 times better than the stock ones and are a inch shorter

The tubes aren't too bad nothing a polish cant fix

And on the frame

All in all pretty good buy for 60 bucks and with nothing to modify. Need to buy an ultrasonic cleaner for the carbs .Also gonna start putting powder to some bits as soon as it gets here from powderbuythepound.

Thanks all

Hey JC,

Nice work so far! Look like you haven't painted your engine yet? I used this stuff when I did mine and so far I'm very pleased.

http://www.eastwood.com/ceramic_engine_paints

Folks around here have debated/argued various pros and cons of different paints, something about some ceramic compounds having insulating properties and so poorly suited for all the cooling fins on motorcycle heads, but I'm just riding here and there around town and not racing anything ever so this stuff looked good to me. Good to 650F and quite inert to fuel etc, and hard as a rock when cured. When I called to order it I was a a little surly (in a friendly manner) with their sales rep demanding to know why I should use their product over someone else's. She neither flinched nor transfered me to their tech department, rather she immediately answered my question with an impressive depth of knowledge. I don't really remember what she said but she mollified me and I was convinced. Seems like there are a few stories around here about DupliColor failing after a couple of years so I was wary of that stuff. I would highly recommend spraying rather than brushing. Just a thought...

Keep up the good work and hope you get out on the road before... August? ;)
The solution is painfully obvious once you know exactly what the problem is.

Thanks percolate! definitely appreciate you looking through my build and commenting. I have not painted the engine yet as i have yet to separate the cases >:( gonna give it another go today! But on the subject of paint i have decided everything on the bike except the tins will be powder coated. . . since i have the tools. I also will be posting a powder coating service as soon as I get a hold of a bigger oven.
