my 1st poker run today, what an experience
« on: July 16, 2006, 11:58:48 PM »
Hey All,
I was driving to my friends house to check in while he is in Cali. I drove by this church and must have been 120 bike's in the parking lot. I had to stop in and check it out. Well they where having a poker run. I have never done this before and it was free. The 1st group left in about an hour so off I went to check on his house. everything ok and head back to the church. I ask what is going on and does it cost anything. No cost, free is good. Just 2 stops on the trip and about 140 miles. we got a envelope with numbers on it, you pick a number and they punch it. at the end of the run they open it up and see what hand you have. As the first group was starting to go 3 groups of about 22-25 in each group. As we are all standing around people are getting on there bike's and starting them, there was a pop. All you here is people screaming fire. The man sitting on his bike dumped it and jumped off it very quickly. I couldn't beleive how fast it went up in flames. bikes parked all around and close. I jumped to grab the bike closest to it and could not beleive how hot it was. It seamed like 20 seconds to push this bike 30ft. away. A couple bags on other bike got hot and showed signs of starting to melt. I never found out who's bike I saved but sure he was a happy camper. After that we found out he was like me and saw all the bike's and wanted to join in on the fun. He just bought the bike 8 day's ago and had no insurance on it. Not sure what kinda bike it was. It took about 20 seconds for someone to grab the fire extenquisher from the church. The bike was allready burnt to a crisp.
Then someone in the first group had an accident. The people following them say no real reason they could see but just ran off the road. No speeding or wild riding involved something that just happened. No body will know till someone asks the driver. He hurt his back and his wife did the same and broke her arm. They where on a fully dressed harley. Just an important lesson that anything can happen in a second. They anounced a fund raiser for the guy who's bike caught on fire during dinner. Withing about 20 min. donations where up to about $800 for him. This was there 6th year doing this and first time anything like this ever happened. I'm glad no one got hurt bad.
I didn't get anything in my hand, but had a great time and met some really nice folk's.
I was on my 75 wing and could of won a prize for the oldest bike but that was not a catagory. It was 103 today and my bike ran real hot till we got up about a 1000 ft. It ran great the whole trip but man do I need new rear shock's.

...just getting to see a bike go up in flames was worth the stop.   ;D  The fact that it was an HD is gravy...   :o

The accident could of happened to anyone or any bike. I was just saying that is was a harley. Not that that was the reason for the crash. If I had a harley I would still ride. I have nothing againg them just mentioned what bike it was. After all said and done it was devestating for the bike owner that his bike burned and no one was hurt. It was pretty cool (Hot) though.
