Good advice you Dad has given you.  Reminds me of the old saying - The cheapest bikes are the most expensive bikes.

I have a feeling that said and done, you'll do fine with this project.

Doing some baking today at the suggestion of a SOOC member, and confirmed with my dad's shop partner.  The water in the rim can be baked out.  300 degrees for an hour should cook out any water inside.

Greggo<< Changing the front tire on the CB750 this morning so while the tire is off I'll snap some pictures of the lower fork tubes. You can get a better look at the refinish work.

Here are some pictures while the front wheel was removed.

Right side.

Left side but hard to see with the overhead lighting and bright sun.

He sands them out then sprays them. With what I do not remember.

He does great work but unfortunately I have to track him down. He was offering the service on flea bay.

A few things came in the mail, so I was able to finish up my carbs with viton o-rings for the fuel tees.  They were NLA from Honda, and I couldn't find them anywhere but ebay in 8x2mm.  The original size is 7.8x1.9mm, so these ones are close enough.  Viton is a strange feeling material, it has more friction to it than normal rubber.  Here's a link to the auction for anyone needing them: http://www.ebay.com/itm/160853149464?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

I also got in the mail my new CycleX fork tubes, which are beautiful.  It will be a shame to hide them under gaiters.  They did forget to send me the free fork seals I was promised.  Pretty weak because I'm taking all of next week off work, and I was planning to put them together one of the days I'm at the shop, where there's help.  So, you guys may have to answer some questions when I finally get the seals.  I'm now thinking about having the fork lowers clear coated after I finish them; that seems to be what the other sandcast guys do, and I want it to be up to par.

I got tired of the electrolysis method for cleaning the tank, so I bought some Evapo-Rust and threw a gallon in the wrinkle tank.  I think some sorcerer must have brewed that stuff, because it's working some magic ;D I'm letting it soak overnight, so I'll post before/after pics in the morning.  It only eats up the rust, and if I don't rinse it out, it will leave a film that will prevent flash rust for up to two weeks - plenty of time to fog it with something to last until after the paint.  I bought two gallons, but only put one in.  I've been rotating it every hour, and it's making great progress.  The metal looks like NOS tanks I've had in the cleanest spots after half of a day.

Looking forward to see the magic inflicted tank. I have a K1 tank that I nearly gave away but may give the Evorrust a shot  if you are endorsing it.

+1 on the evaporust. I let mine dry after and put nothing else in for months with no noticeable difference.

Evapo-rust is amazing stuff....I used it on a Yamaha project recently with a lot of rusty bits.  It's a staple in the garage now.

This tank was in bad shape when I got it.  I only used one gallon in this big tank, so it had trouble reaching some spots on the spine that didn't get an equal soaking.  I drained it to get a good look, and I'm going to add the used gallon, and a fresh one to get better coverage.  SO, the best before and after shot is actually one picture.  The spine that's still kinda rusty is a pretty good example of how bad the rest of the tank was when I started.  If you look to the sides, on the bottom of the tank looks brand new.  Truth be told, the bottom was worse than the spine, which still got some cleaning action just from getting splashed in there.

Here's the spine before the evapo-rust.

No need to coat it I think unless its sitting for a while after the treatment. I'll be fogging it with oil or something however.

I used two stroke oil in the RD tank after I did a vinegar treatment.

That's probably what I'll do as well.

Here's the finished product for now.  I plan to strip the paint off tomorrow morning at my dad's shop, and then see if the badges were just filled in, or if there's damage.  But, from what I can tell looking inside the tank, they're just filled in.  Then, it's off to the paint-less dent guy for some work.  If I decide I want to let the magic potion soak for another day or two, I'll do it before it goes off for paint.  For now, the difference is miraculous: at least 97% of the rust is gone, and if I'm reading the label correctly, it will continue to eat what little bit is left if I don't rinse it with water (I'm not rinsing it with water).  There's a little bit of the potion left at the bottom of the tank that looks nasty, but the metal under is pretty.

A better picture after draining:
