Brake pads 1977 Honda 750F2

:-[  I admit I'm sort of embarassed to be asking this question and the fact that I didn't find anything on it in the forum increases my embarassement - but I can't take it anymore and have to ask!  (The Clymers manual has so many holes in it!  Not like the one for the 1981 DOHC which was so helpful).
A few years ago, when I first bought the bike, I took the calipers in to be rebuilt because I felt uncomfortable working on them at the time.  Well, I'm taking the front ones apart right now and am looking at reassembling them.  What's bothering me is that when I took the pads off, I noticed that there was this pink sort of past behind them, (on the side that would be pushed by the piston).  What I want to know is - do the pads have to be pasted or something to the piston and the other side of the caliper or do they just sit in there "loose".  There is a flexible "pressure clip" behind them, but it seems strange to me that they would just sit there like that.  What brings them back away from the disc when you let off the brake?  I need to understand this to finish the job.  Can someone please help me to understand.  I'm sorry if the question is maybe a bit (or alot) lame.
