I just finished installing a new oil seal on the gear shift shaft and didn't pay close enough attention when I pulled the sprocket off to know which way it goes back on.

There were two drive sprocket fixing plates: one behind and one in front. The one behind doesn't seem to serve any purpose, does it?  The P.O. may have placed it in there as a spacer? I only see one in the parts list.

Also which side of the sprocket is supposed to face outward? the side with the raised center area or the flush side? I imagine it makes a difference for chain/rear wheel sprocket alignment.

Hope you can help. I feal like a dummy, not paying close enough attention but I don't want to screw it up.

p.s. The front sprocket is a 16 tooth. not sure what the rear is, but I'll check soon.

Hiya jph550,

raised center faces outwards (see pic). Your dual fixing plate assembly maybe a P.O. mod. Shimming out sprocket slack seems to be a quite common thing, as I've seen that on some used bikes before.

Success...

rt,
thanks for your help. I think I've seen that picture before too. Having greasy fingers doesn't boed well for page turning. Must have missed it when looking back through the manual again and again.  ???

I guess I'll shim it out as before. No sense fixing what's not broken or working.

Success and peace!  :)
