I'm excited project 500/4
« on: January 25, 2012, 05:34:52 AM »
Don't know what happened to my topic before but I am restoring this 500/4 to it's former glory for a mate of mine. He's been on E-Bay already looking for parts with some good results but slowly does it to get a good result.I will keep you informed on the resto.

i was about to reply to your tank colour question then it dissapeared?when i first got this bike at first glance i thought it had the factory faded and crazed paint, when i stripped it i found it was originally the candy green, the side covers seemed to be factory though so wether it had the tank replaced at some point?

Does your 500 run?  If so, you just need a bunch of cleaning scraping, painting and beer drinking.
Some days the sun is too loud.

The guy I got it from said he ran it about ten yrs ago and it was blowing a lot of smoke. Could be a number of things causing it, I will be pulling it all apart next week when it is cooler. At the moment in Adelaide every day has been over 35 c so it's to hot to work in the shed.

Thanks for the info on your tank Dave. I think I will go with that color.

And here it's been -35C. 70 degrees difference. Are you planning a restore to standard?

I'm restoring it for a mate and he wants it returned to full stock but with a little tweeking of the motor to give it a bit more power. I also have a spare set of 610 barrels but until I pull it down I don't know if the motor is ok.

I have a 605 kit for my 550 but haven't installed it yet.I can see a 500 benefiting from a 610. And from the outside you can't tell it's there. You might want to upgrade the clutch though. Have fun!

Well it's been a while now but because of the weather being so hot lately I haven't been able to get in the shed. The motor is ready to come out and my mate has been busy on e-bay searching for parts for the resto. We are going to restore it to it' original glory but there are a lot of parts missing but Cuddles is doing a great job getting the parts I need. I love the  team effort going on here, it makes things a lot easier.

A mate welded up this stand to support the motor so it makes it much easier to work on.

looking good paul, nice attention to detail with those carbs,of course you have an air compressor?if your carbs are clean there will be no need to repeatedly remove them once the engine is running as so many seem to do,and then find out it was the points or some other non carb related thing anyway, youll be 100% sure you dont need to pull the carbs again, keep up the pics,we like pics,,also its more fun when its not a job,,some loser will come back and winge you didnt do my carbs good or similar, and he has bad ignition.

Dave, I swear these carbs looked new inside cause when I pulled them apart the bowls were clean as a whistle and the seals looked fine. I have replaced all the seals and blown out all the galleries so there won't be a problem I hope. Thanks for your interest mate. Starting on the motor this week.
