Advice on first 750
« on: March 28, 2013, 03:23:26 AM »
Hey guys I'm looking at buying a 750 and have been looking around for a while to make up my mind which I want, I personally like spoked wheels and prefer the tank of the F. In saying this i'm fairly open to all models pre 1979 and one of my main concerns is reliability.

A few things to keep in mind I'm 6'5,
I don't mind waiting for the right bike to come up for sale and would prefer something with lower Km's and in  good condition. I'm also very mechanically minded and could repair/maintain most issues.

This has popped up for sale and is reasonably cheap, But it does have relatively high mileage This is what the seller says about it "Classic 70's Superbike!

1976 CB750 F1 Supersport

Good condition. Recent service and tune. New steering head bearings. New fork seals.

Current WOF. Reg on hold.

A great daily ride and a real head turner.

77,000km "

Is mileage a big factor or am I more looking at the overall condition of the bike?

I'd like some advice wether this model is a good choice and what things I should take a closer look at when inspecting the bike?

Welcome Tony....mileage s not normally a big factor when buying one of these bikes, condition is.
77K certainly isn't low, if you plan on using it for a daily rider and putting a lot of k's, you may want to keep looking.
The later F models had valve guide issues but I believe '76 were fine.  Go look at it in person, pics can be deceiving and see how it runs.  Any blue smoke? Idle nice and smooth?

Good luck.

Hi Tony

Thats a great looking bike and looks to be well maintained. 77K isnt out of the ordinary for that bike (my own 2; CB750K2, CB750K4 have 58,000 and 78,000 miles respectively and have been used as daily riders). I used to have a bike like the one in your photos (in Scotland, UK) and used it every day rain, hail or shine. CB750s are very reliable once they are have been setup properly. BTW I am 6`4 and have found the Fs to be slightly taller than the early Ks which still fit me fine.

Good luck!
Andy

The original units were kilometers not miles. So it would be 1293 km (803 miles)

I was talking about the units the PO used to describe the mileage of the bike (i.e. km) and not the actual gauge unit ;)

I will get flamed here but don't rule out the 79 F model.  Tall as a horse, fast, 3 disc brakes, very sharp black with red and orange stripes from the factory.  Look at the front of the engine for cam chain wear through repairs.  OK, back to our regularly scheduled 69-78.............
36 years of this stuff, here to help.

Thanks for the help guys, seems like metric units throws some confusion into this forum. I'm from New Zealand and like 95% of the world we use the metric system  :P

It would be a daily rider so I'd put a few KM's on it.

Good to hear it's a comfortable ride for tall people.

As far as a 79 goes I don't like the styling quite as much.

He want's 3000nzd Which is $2500 usd

I saw a 77 F with 44,00km sell for $2200 usd

And a guy with a 1977 K  with 100,000k has been trying  to get $3200 USD for ages

We know prices are much higher there, that doesnt sould too crazy.

When are you going to look at it?  Have you ridden much??

When you go see it, you'll get a feeling if it is right. Don't ask me how, it just seems to happen.

Might go look at it today, Havn't ridden much and am only licensed up to 660cc.

My old man is quite an experienced rider  except for the last 30 years he's only ridden a 1950's Vincent but  I might take him only for his input anyway.
