pull cable
« on: April 03, 2013, 05:21:06 PM »
I have a set of mid 70's cb750 carburetors with the manual choke lever on the left side; they are the ones in my avatar photo  that i have mounted up on my 79 cb650. Anyhow they are set to run with only the pull cable. Mine is frayed up pretty badly and ready to snap. I know Soos and maybe a few other members here experimented with using the 750 carbs on the 650 engine. Would any one know of the actual bike that a new pull cable is ordered for so i can replace? I found no markings on my original cable as this setup was on this bike when i bought it 3 years ago. For now i am running with stock pd50s that came off my parts bike. But the pull cable for pd50s is too long.  If anybody knows which proper "pull throttle cable" this setup runs please let me know. thanks.

I switched to the stock pd50s as my 750 carbs are dirty; didn't want to miss out on driving time while i am saving up to get kits for the 750 carbs....always pays to have a set in the shed as spares :)

I'm pretty sure you can't go wrong with 72-76 pull cable. I have both 72 and 76 carbs and the cable would be the sameT. the cable will work but do you need more/less free length? Measure your current cable and compare to what the stock cable would be.

I got some photos to show; taken with my cellphone so the resolution isn't perfect but will give you an idea as to what my real problems are

The pull cable part was sawed off so now it has the side for the push cable; after i took another look at the cable it was a push cable pulling the carbs open. I loooked at the RH plastic(starter button/kill switch) piece and it was threaded for the push cable to  mount in the pull position holder on the handlebars; no picture of that but thats irrelevant now as i got a spare from my 650 parts bike; just no spare cable; now i am adding all the pics i took so far.

Photos 2,3, and 6 show the hacked off pieces for the actual pull cable hookups. Idiot PO only had to bend the front cable holder to clear the frame rail not hack it to hell! Now i have to measure the "push cable" length(since it was made to act like an actual pull cable) to try and source one; or get proper throttle linkage piece that takes both cables so i can use my 2 for my 79 pd50 carbs...oh the fun i tell ya!

I got carb kits coming in for my pd50s this week so i will clean them as they won't idle. Ethanol gas is a headache; just cause you press the supreme button on the pump doesn't mean much as the pump line at the gas station holds about a gallon of fuel that gets pushed into your tank before you get the 91 octane good  stuff! The pd50s run fine out on the road but they're dirty. I will get kits later for the 750 carbs later, then i will see bout getting a cable of another rack that isn't hacked up.

Amazing what perspective is when you walk away from it for a day; my perception was WRONG! The push cable setup was what is hacked off, not the pull setup.  Will measure up the cable i got; both the case length and the cable length and see what shows up.

Cable case length from end of adjuster threads at carb hookup to handlebar end 40 inches. Inner  length 42 7/8 inches; add the size of nipples at each end; 5/32 x 2 ; unless i read my tape wrong.

Damn Google; why the hell can't i get a listing on the replacement cable with my measurements? Always get links to manufacturers but no one company has a listing with lengths; just bike specific cables(year/engine). I may have to go to my local boneyard and try to find something that matches what i got.....fun never ends!

I found a video on youtube for repairing cable ends by "Donboy73". Type  soldering throttle and brake cables in google and it will take you to the links in Youtube. Haven't figured out copy and paste so try it this way. I got a broken cb650 throttle cable i can shorten and repair to get this up and running.

Got a fellow in a bike shop an hour away cutting my new pull cable; it was for a cb550 1975. Shop screwed up order; anyhow the case is 1 1/2" longer than the other frayed up cable. He is one the the few shops that actually do this round here for $20. He is giving me some slack to work with as the new cable has adjusters at both ends. Now i can get everything back together and not have to go through the headache of trying to locate an accelerator pump for the pd50 carbs!

Well; the shortened cable didn't last long. I had the airbox off my cb650 when i installed these carbs so i could look to see if the repaired cable opend the slides all the way. It did but when i let go of the grip it snapped back and pulled the wire out of the new brass end. No photo but the end looked like he never drilled a hole and fed the wire through before soldering it together. This may have worked on a dirt bike with 1 carb but not a multi carb rack. Any suggestions on doing this so i can reuse the new brass end again?

Acc. pump showed up for the original pd50 carbs. Since i got the 750 set on the engine after my timing chain replacement i am going to make the new end this morning with a chunk of lead solder. Either way i will be up and running this afternoon.

Well; my solder job didn't pan out either; so i said fu-k it and put my stock pd50 carbs back on. I cleaned them and soldered up the air cutoff diaphram holes on the airbox side as the diaphrams were going bad.

Silver solder for metal; filled the hole with lots of flux and patience, lots of patience. Anyhow cleaned and soldered carbs installed; had both throttle cables for this set. Fired up and finally after a year i got it to idle at 1200rpm. Before all this it would quit every time i stopped; ran fine on the road. Set the air screws (front side toward engine) to 1 5/8 turns as Honda shop manual said. A little rough at idle but as long as it idles i can live with it, didn't have a small enough screwdriver to fit on and fine adjust.
