RPMs go up when bike is tilted and after higher RPM run?
« on: April 23, 2013, 01:10:13 PM »
I finally took my ’78 CB550 for the first spin.  When I bought it she wasn’t running well.  I rebuild my carbs over the winter, new main jets (slow jets are stock) and gaskets, bench sync, I also put pod filters, spark plugs and 4 to 1 exhaust.  At low rpms there is no torque but once she hits +4k she pulls nicely all the way to red line. After quick run when I stopped the RPMs didn’t go down, they remained at ~3k, I adjust the throttle screw to get lower RPM but then eventually she died.  When I got home and get her idle again  around 1.5k I realized that RPMs go up when I tilt the bike.  Any idea what can it be? I assume something with fuel delivery or distribution between carbs? All floats where adjusted and seemed to work correctly. Any help appreciated!

You have to check to see if the throttle cables are binding in any way press down to make sure the stop is being reached.  Another cause could be the springs in the advance mechanism

Thanks, it seems the cables are ok, what concerns me is why the RPMs go up when the bike is tilted to the side, e.g. from upright position to the side without turning the handle bar…can some carbs get over floated with gas?

float level and/or vacuum leak.

After wasting my time to redo bench sync just to find out I did it right the first time, I swallowed my pride and rechecked float levels again…that I was sure I set it up correctly and they were right on money 14.5mm!…thanks I took this advice as I found out that float needle on carb 3 is shot and only allowed float movement in one direction!  Just placed an order for replacement, just to be safe I will change them on all 4 carbs….thanks again…I let you know if this fixes the issue I have……
