CB500 Carb Questions
« on: July 27, 2006, 06:49:14 PM »
I have a '73 CB500 That wasn't taken very good care of by the previous owner. It did run when I bought it for $150 but would never idle. Please note here that I am not a mechanic and I am doing this all from a Chiltons guide. The carbs were leaking fuel and I decided to rebuild them as my first step to getting this thing running. So here is what I've run into:

1. This "aledged" leaf spring in the float bowl. None of my carbs had one. Is this thing a dealer installed option or am I missing them.

2. Does the main jet come out? If so, how?

3 The little ball shaped holders on the link arm, one of mine is broke. I swear I didn't do it. Can I get one from honda?

Does anyone has a better exploded picture of the carb with all of the parts listed?

I don't know what kind of connection you have, but there is a PDF manual in the FAQ's.

It sounds from your post like the previous owner was inside the carbs at some point, cause if the leaf springs aint there, someone left them out. They aren't factory options, but actually hold pressure on the "pressed in" main jets to keep them in place. The main jets have o rings on them where they press into the center of the carb body, and have what's known as "emulsion tubes" located furthur up inside the carb body, visible only after main jet has been pulled, The other jet, the one with the slot, is the idle jet, which is threaded and unscrews. As for throttle link parts, they are probably very difficult at best to find new anymore. The parts list should show you what goes where, but it may still be dificult
to figure out, especially if you're a novice. You may want to get on ebay and find a COMPLETE AND UNMOLESTED rack of carbs from a seller with a good feedback score/reputation and once you've obtained a set, you can note how everything is put together. It'll save you a big headache trying to figure if anything's missing or out of place. After that, you can ask the carb gurus here questions about the correct way to rebuild and set up your carbs.

No the ball aint a seperate part and never was sold so your only way now is a used set from ebay. They tend to sell at anything from $10 to $80 plus shipping!
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

With or without the rebuild kits?

With if they're Honda; without if they're Keyster...   ;)

Complete; manifolds, insulators, and carbs+linkage. Oh, yeah - what number is stamped on the flanges???

Look at carb #4; toward the rear where it bolts to the linkage plate; on the right side of the top of the flange there will be a 4-digit number stamped...you may have to clean it off...

Eureka! 627B. The kits are K&L some I'm assuming you wouldn't want those.

627B's are my carbs, all right! I haven't read anything at all about K&L kits; do they have all the o-rings, gasket, and jets??? Are those the ones made in Canada??? I seem to recall a Canadian company makes some carb kits...and petcock kits, too...forgot which company/site, though...
