360 cam chain question
« on: July 29, 2006, 02:16:06 PM »
What years of 360 Twin has cam chain tensioner issues and what is the fix?

I found a nice 360 Scrambler for the GF.  VERY low miles and looks perfect for her.

Only thing that gives me the heebee-jeebees is that I heard the early 360s had camchain tensioner issues.

Any downside to the 360 Scrambler?

74/75  was the problem years.  By 76 they had it fixed.  At least thats my understanding.
My 76 just turned 18k and havent had any probs. 14k has been in the last 4yrs.

I think upgrading it to the 76 parts.

Worked on em when new allong with the 250. Tensioner and chain had no real problem EXCEPT not being adjusted properly or often enough. Seem to remember adjuster similar to 400 but braincells could be wrong.

My buddy has a 76 scrambler. Never had any trouble with it. His dad owned it before, so I've known the bike for about 20 years! Funny though, I only remember it on the road about twice a year. Probably explains the low miles! ::)

I've seen the update somewhere recently (within last year ::) ;D), it was in a sevice bulletin, maybe online. I know I have it on disc but dont know where at present. There were very few official problems with 360, you may be able to get parts NOS, they will be the modified ones as all the 'bad' stuff was recalled.

The issue was they did not put a thick enough layer of rubberized teflon on the tensioner blade and in some cases the chain could wear through it. The tensioner slipper, the two rubber endcaps and the upper slipper holder were redesigned. It's not that hard to fix as you only have to remove the valve cover and the engine can stay in the bike. Someone posted the PDF file for the update procedure a while back, but it was purged (hence the "sorry" post at the top of the list).

All is not lost, as the parts are still obtainable from Western Hills Honda or CMS. Even better, look on the engine serial # plate. Dealers were supposed to but 3 punch marks in a triangle pattern next to the serial # if this update was performed.

Was all this improved by the 76's?     I had heard it was.  Hoping too as mine is a 76 ;D.
