If you're talking about the top plate, which has the slanted corks on it (instead of the square-cut ones), not to worry. You can replace it with an ordinary plate, and it will actually last LONGER than before.

Honda installed the top plate with slanted cork blocks seemingly at random, starting in the K5 bikes. By the time of the F1, they all had this top plate. The general idea behind it was that this plate slips more than the others, so dropping the clutch hard (like a burnout start) would make things easier on the 1st and 2nd gears. Those gears, starting in the K5 tranny, had no oil holes feeding to their center bushing, in order to increase oil flow elsewhere in the gearbox (mainly the clutch hub) to try to reduce the sticky shifting when the engine was hot and the rider was using 10w40 oils. Trouble is, this puts almost ALL of the slip on this one plate in city stop-and-go traffic, so this plate wears out quickly. If you replace it with a normal plate, this startup slip goes away, so don't go racing with it. ;)

You're looking for PN 22322-371-020, mostly used in the F bikes and the GL1000.
Check with http://www.cyclexchange.net/.
I know their "Super Clutch Kit" includes one.

It would be very strange to find one of those in a K4 clutch.  :o

wayyyy late, but if anyone is still listening....

I have a double riveted steel plate in my K8. is there any way that could be causing issues? or is it still just an upgrade for the noisy/sloppy clutch issues from back in the day?

The K8 or (1978) had an improved clutch.

What exactly is an improved clutch

Honda attempted to improve the clutch in such a way that it would not damage the shift dogs on the C2 gear when someone hot-rodded it into 2nd gear, and because the 1st gear was taller than the earlier bikes (beginning with F0). This was done by installing one less friction plate (6 instead of 7) and using a double-stacked, spring-separated, riveted steel plate in either the 2nd or 4th position (from the inside) in the pack. The top plate was replaced with one having slanted cork blocks as well.

What this does: when dropping the clutch hard, it lets the pack slip for about 2 full turns before fully engaging. This was to reduce drivetrain shock (mostly to lower warranty costs).

As the bikes have aged, those rivets on the double-stack plate have become loose. This leads to the infamous "clutch rattle at idle" problem, a noisy clattering sound that usually goes away as the engine is revved up past 2000 RPM. One fix for this is posted above, using the GL1000 double-thick steel plate in plate of the riveted one. This still lets the stack slip at startup, which usually wears out the top plate long before the others.

Another "fix" is to just use 7 friction plates and 6 normal steel plates, like the earlier bikes had. Just don't go dragracing every day with it, and it will be fine. ;)
