Help with oil leak
« on: May 18, 2013, 05:40:17 PM »
So after starting the bike for the first time today I was excited. Came home and noticed there is already an oil leak. There was no oil leak before I started it, even after I kicked the bike over a lot. I am including a pic of where the leak seems to be doing from. This is the pin in the back between 1&2. I read somewhere, could this be bc I put too much oil in? Is it probably gasket? It's a cb350f. Thanks for the help in advance.
Also I'm not sure if it is coming from the top of the pin or bottom but I think the top.

Under the cam towers inside the head, there are rubber pucks that seal the access holes for some of the head studs.  When these harden and shrink oil leaks out around these studs.  On the 350 the top end work can be done with the engine in the frame, so it's much easier and less time-consuming to replace the top end seals and gaskets than on a 750.

I was retorquing the studs and broke one :( i have some others laying around but I think i may have stretched some of them in the past. How do I know if i have stretched them past what they should be used? Also can someone show me a diagram with these pucks in them.

the 350 dosent have those pucks or cam towers like a 750,they have washers under acorn nuts.

if your missing any washers the acorn(dome nuts)can bottom out causing your broken studs?even though your torque wrench says not to?

Okay so tore it down again. Removed all the studs. My next few questions are 1. Is the gasket in the pic able to be reused again. It was only on the bike for a bit and only while it was running for a minute. 2. How can I tell which studs are best to use because I do have spares. 3. do the copper washers under the stud bolts go bad? i have them all but wondering if they become to flat to use or do they stay good?

you can hat up then quench copper washers to soften them,if the gasket isnt torn itll be ok.

My mistake.  Thank you for the correction.  It's been a long time since I worked on a 350 or 400. :-[

How would you suggest heating them up, a propane touch or just boiling them?
