« on: June 05, 2013, 06:31:19 PM »
Time to replace my steering bearings.  Anyone have any opinions on the best ones and part number (or better yet a link?)

+1 All Balls.  Is this something you plan to tackle yourself?

Its actually easier than most noobie mechanics think.

I do work on the bike but this is something I will let someone else handle.  Though I plan to assist so I can learn... ;)  Any tips you can provide?

I learn best when I actually do it myself :)

the spacer for the lower bearing is the thin one (or most likely).

Do you have a center stand? Easier if you do and you'll have to support the front end somehow or use a motorcycle jack to raise the front. Take off the tank to reduce the risk of damage and use ropes to hold your handlebars and headlight so you don't have to dissemble everything.
Doing this in a garage with open rafters makes it easy.
And you'll need a long drift punch to remove the old races from the frame. A pipe will work in a pinch.
There are many threads, read up for other tips.
Not real difficult if you know the procedure. And we're here for you....

Definitely try yourself..... I got these down where I can start and have it back together in an hour and 30 min tops.... Stev-o explained it well.... Or you can measure a 2x4 to 31 inches.... Put on center stand...... Put the 2x4 under the neck to support it....
