The problem (still lingers) IS SOLVED!!!... ignition that is.
« on: August 01, 2006, 02:38:48 PM »
Okay, so… to make a long story short.  I had my bike at the shop because my 1 & 4 cylinders were not firing.  The mechanic traced the problem??? To the Dyna S ignition power module for 1 & 4.  So, I ordered a new Dyna S from Z1.  I put it on this afternoon and I still couldn’t get a spark to my 1 & 4’s.  Hmmmm…..  The mechanic tested the coils and they checked out.  I looked at all of the wiring and it checks out.  My buddy is lending me his Dyna coils to see if my problem is actually a bad coil, but I don’t think so.  What to do:  Run all new wires to be sure that it isn’t a bad wire somewhere?  This problem really has me stumped…  Luckily, I have time to work on it while my tank and side covers are at the paint shop, plus it is actually to freakn’ hot to ride today.  I’d have to do a “ton” to stay cool.
Any ideas boys on what to do from here? THANKS.

Later,
Sparty

The only thing I can suggest is what I would do:

Start at the spark plugs, and work your way back through the ignition system until you find power.  Once you find it, you know the problem (or at least one of them) is with the last part you checked.

Gordon,

Thanks.  That is pretty much what I had planned.  I'll see what happens. :-[

I would check that both coils are getting +12V power first. Then check wire continuity between the coil and where the Dyna plugs into the harness. If they all check out then swap the (colored) coil leads and see if you get any spark on 1-4 or 2-3. If the problem stays the same, there's a coil problem or a HT cable problem - wire(s) bad, plug cap(s) bad, or somehow grounding out somewhere. If it now fires 1-4 but not 2-3 then there's a primary wiring problem, Dyna problem, or some adjustment problem with the 1-4 pickup.

I had the exact same problem with my Dyna-S except that 2&3 would intermittently cut out and bike would run on 1&4. I went ahead and bought a pair of the green 3 ohm Dyna coils and new wires to no avail. Same issue. So I bought another Dyna-S module and while I was installing it I found that the shop who had installed the first module had not placed the grey wire coming from the module through the grommet at the points cover all that well. It had pinched the grey wire and the heat had turned the wire a little brown. I was certain I had an intermittent open inside the grey wire for the 2&3 cylinders at that point. Sure enough, the new module works great! The weak point is through the grommet at the points cover hole. I'm waiting for Dyna to confirm this on the first module. As I said, my problem was intermittent. It would run fine, then cut out for a few blocks, then run fine again, then cut out for a mile or 2, then.....you get the idea! Frustrating to say the least. I'm glad I got the green Dyna coils anyhow. The 30 year old plug wire boots were taped up and, well, 30 years old! Nonetheless, I love that setup. No more points!  ;D

What wires did you order with your coils and are the plug caps resistor type caps nothing to do with your problems but Ineed to order some plugs but don't have the wires yet.

Cheers

It is not unheard of for a Dyna coil to fail either, I've had to replace two over the years.

By the way biffta, I get 8mm solid core wire from nology.com, item #250 001 082 by the foot. They can also supply coil wire terminals R004001 and rubber coil boots R003016.

Guys,

My ignition problem is SOLVED... sweet mother of the universe... the bike is running stronger than ever.  All four cylinders are firing and the bike is producing some excellent power.  (You may remember that my top and bottom end were rebuilt with some porting and polishing).  My Honda mechanic told me to take it easy on my way home, he wasn't kidding.  I swear that my front tire came up a few times when I cracked the throttle.  Wow!  I am stoked.

The Dyna Ignition was the problem, like we guessed, it was a bad power module.  But my wiring had also seen better days, so we ran some new wires and presto.  The bike screams.

Now, I just need to rebuild my front barke caliper and I should be good for the rest of the year... Yeah Right!
