Stumped and Frustrated ! troubleshooting problems
« on: August 03, 2006, 05:45:07 AM »
Hey Guys,

Last week, I finally got the bike running again after installing a used engine.  My original engine had a burnt valve so I thought the easiest and quickest way to ride again would be a used engine, so far I have been wrong.  The replacement engine has good compression but it’s history is unknown to me.

The bike ran great on Monday and Tuesday, everything worked with the exception of minor issues.  On Thursday, I really wanted to test the bike so I took it on an extended ride.

After about 50 miles of riding at about 60-70 MPH on some back roads, I stopped for some gas.  I started the bike and it stalled, being a warm day I didn’t think anything about it and continued on my way.

After another 50 miles of spirited riding 60-80 MPH, I did a U-turn because I missed a side road I wanted to check out.  At this point, the bike stalled and wouldn’t start.  I finally got it going and actually had to use some choke.  ???

By this time, I’m in the middle of nowhere so I had to continue back home, it seemed to run normal at speed but would stall when I stopped.

Now, when I start the bike, I just won’t idle.  It runs and seems to rev normally above 2500 RPM.  My first thought was the carbs, I completely disassembled and cleaned them, bench synched them and the bike still does the same thing.  :(

What am I missing?  I checked points, timing, charging, I’m stumped and frustrated.  Why would this problem creep up this way?

Sorry for the long tale but how do I find this problem.  >:(

I know you said you cleaned your carbs but your symptoms sound like clogged idle jets. Did you confirm that they are clear.   What does the tank look like inside?  Perhaps your in your  extended ride rust etc made its way into the idle circuit?

How is the gas flow to your carbs? Maybe a plugged filter or gas cap vent? I'd guess a fuel problem.
