Cb650 carb question
« on: June 25, 2013, 11:53:29 AM »
So is there a way to pull the air cut off valves on the #2,3 & 4 carbs without splitting the rack? Carbs are pd's off of a 80 cb650c, pd50e is the stamped #. I realized there's 4 of the little bastards while I was doing the initial soak the other night. I can't get even a screwdriver bit in between the bodies to unscrew the plate.

How much space is available between screw head and obstruction?  Enough for a driver bit to fit?  Enough for a vise grip on a driver bit to fit?

TT,

I tried both a driver bit and one of those bent screwdrivers that look like an Allen key and no joy with either, I'm pretty sure the rack will need to be split apart. If the diaphragm in the #1 carb is any indication of the rest of them they need to be replaced, it was pretty rotten.

Yeah they pretty much have to come apart to get at them.  Vendors want an arm and a leg for each of those cut off valves too, sheesh.

splitting them isn't so bad, be brave. this way you can really give the carbs a good clean without fear of damaging any of the seals. in the long run, it'll save you time and give you peace of mind. the only really trick part of splitting them is refitting the choke spring, so take a picture beforehand.

I don't mind splitting the rack, I was just hoping to save myself the time. Ive got to clean and rebuild them anyway but was hoping to get them back on the bike this weekend. The pisser is the rebuild kit I got for it didn't have the o rings for the fuel passage ways but I think I've got it covered now anyways.

I recently had to replace the accelerator pumps in my bike.  They are tough to find and expensive (50bucks a piece).  I found these at motorcyclecarbs.com in Kennesaw Georgia. I also had to replace the needle jet set on all four carbs.  The ones in the carbs had some kind of corrosion on them and did nothing to regulate fuel flow.  I found the jet set at cmsl.  I bought the last 4 they had and could not find them elsewhere also about 50 bucks a piece.  My bike would not rev over 5200 RPM and now it will climb to redline without issue.  I had tried all the air filter tricks to no avail.

@Wardenrd have you checked out Sirius? Air cut off valves and accelerator pump diaphragms are $17.50 Canadian each, not own Honda but I've used their carb kits before. They also carry a big range of press in idle jets for the PD carbs, which can be tricky to find.

very good on the accelerator pump diaphragm.  I paid much more for mine.  The needle jet set I could not find.  It is 4 pieces16012460771.  These were Honda NOS not that that matters if they work.   Thanks for another source I can not believe I did not find them on the net.
