1975 CB750 Rebuild - Help

Hello All, I just bought my first classic... a 1975 CB750. It runs, and has minimal rust with 14,000 original miles. It does appear to have an oil leak, and the motor smokes when running. I am a newbie, with virtually no experience building engines... Would it be nuts for me to give it a go? I would like to break the whole bike down and build it back up the way I want, and rebuild the whole engine and carbs.

Im pretty handy and a quick learner, but not having a human in real time to help concerns me. First off, Anybody from Mass interested in taking me on as an apprentice in their own shop/garage? Anyone willing to lend me a hand? Anyone willing to be a pen pal/ take calls at random times when I am messing up? Anyone think I am crazy and should give up before I start? If you answered yes to the last question, common man... I'm looking for inspiration.

I have no time restrictions, although I have some monetary restrictions. Im a full time student, and part time employee... so in all likeliness this will be a longer project.

Any advice or help is greatly appreciated, and I will be sure to post updates when that time comes. For now, I will pray someone out there can guide me to a successful rebuild.

Welcome to the forum and Terry from Aus usually takes the new boys under his strong, manly arms on these projects.  ;)
   At 14,000 its a shame its a leaker. Make some more posts till you can put up some pictures of the 75 beast so we can have a look. Till then don't go to crazy tearing it to pieces. If its stock it should be red or that sweet Planet Blue----- unless its Terry's favorite an F  :)

Wheres it leaking? Tach seal? Smoking? How long have you had it running? Is it just moisture cooking out? And not smoke? Give it a bit and a full tune-up and see if things settle back in place after its broke back in to steady use.

Where the hell are you, Terry!? haha I look forward to his guidance, until then, I will take some pictures when I get home from work... perhaps even upload a video of it running to youtube and post the link here. I appreciate your comments... All the help I can get is very much needed. I haven't fully identified where it is leaking from as it was dark when I was looking at it yesterday, and I have been at work all day. I will try to find out, and upload some pictures.

Indeed, it is red... Apricot flake red/orange. Its a sweet looking bike, and it idles well... I had it going for about 20 minutes yesterday. I paid 2,300.... Did i get ripped off? Regardless, I am stoked to be an owner of a CB750 and I look forward to the long road ahead with her.

Also I just want to confirm... Is the petcock supposed to be up when riding, and down just before finishing the ride? Or visa-versa?

Petcock is down for on, forward up for off, rearward up is reserve. There should be writing on the petcock face washer for what position is what.
