Hey guys. I have a question that I was hoping you could help me out with. I also hope I am posting this in the correct spot. I currently have a CB550 that I absolutely love. It's a great bike with great looks and is a ton of fun to ride, but that being said I have been looking for something a little better on the highway (meaning a little heavier and faster).

With that being said a friend of a friend has a 750 done in a cafe style that I really really like.  He's asking $1500 for the bike but I'd like to give him around $1200 ... would this be a good deal for me?

1500?? thats a STEAL. if it runs just pay it. don't risk losing a bike over $300. if I were up that way the bike would be loaded up on my trailer right now.

dont ignore the bluing of the pipes, thats a lean condition. looks like they wernt with pods and a 4-1 pipe without rejetting. get in those carbs and tune it up right.

Don't be a tight-arse mate, it's worth the 1500 that your mate is asking. Blued headers aren't necessarily an over-lean condition, my fuel injected Triumph with computerised engine management's pipes run blue all the time, however, that's a K7 or K8, and with pod filters on those PD carbs, it will be running very lean if in fact the seller hasn't changed the main jets up to around 130 or so. As far as the blue-ing goes ... I think it may be caused my a too rich condition. I talked to the owner yesterday and he said he had a bit of trouble getting it to run right. He said he started at a 130 jet size and kept going up from there. The exhaust is also a MAC so I'm not sure if that could also being a contributing factor as they aren't known to be the best exhaust systems out there. I'm going to take a good look at the bike on Sunday and hopefully get a test ride in. I'll let you guys know the results. Thanks for the replies guys.

That bike was shown some love. Painted frame means he took out the motor, looks like replaced bars, shocks, obvious paint job, seat, motor covers...buy it for 1500.

I'm happy to report that I did buy the bike. I paid the $1500 which I still a good deal, although a little more than I wanted. Needless to say though I'm very excited about it. She's a 78 750 with about 13K on the clock. She runs strong, but I think a carb sync might be in order. Here's a pic of me on the  newest addition to my stable

Yes it does. What size wheel and shocks are on it? I would like to get mine lower like that so I can put both my feet flat.

Well worth $1500 although I don't know how good of a highway bike it would be.

You're sure not gonna build anything close to that for 1500 from a barn find or even a ugly runner.  That's a pretty bike that somebody has put some effort and $$$ into.

Thanks for the encouragement guys it means a lot, that's why I love this forum. I'm not sure about the shocks, but I'll ask the previous owner if he remembers the brand. The front fork tubes are up through the triple tree a couple inches as well. I just had it up on the freeway and it did pretty well, much smoother and sturdier (I guess that's how I want to phrase it) than my 550. And yeah, I'm definitely keeping my 550 ... I friggen love these bikes so much I couldn't dare to part with either of them.

Totally agree. Had a 550 first, then decided I wanted a 750 for the same reason as you, sold the 550 and bought my K4. Then missed the 550, so bought another. And another, and another...

I can't say I blame you. These bikes are an addiction.  I love my 550 dearly, it's the first bike I ever bought. My plan at the moment is the change the drag bars I put on the 550 to superbike bars, this way I can ride the 750 (which my dad couldn't even get on) and my pops can ride the 550. Old Honda cruising here we come.

Thanks again guys for the kind words. I do have a question that may be answered somewhere on the forums already but I haven't quite nailed it down yet. My question being ... what are the best pods to run? I know the stock box is the best answer to that question but seeing as I don't have it, and I do happen to like the looks of the pods (I know I know form over function ... shameful) but I was wondering if a different style of pod, say one with a foam filter would help with tuning a bit. Any help or anyone who can point me in the right direction to find out would be awesome. I'm gonna keep searching myself

Actually I have one more quick question: What is a good carb sync gauge to get that is reasonably priced but still accurate enough to be worth buying. Having two old CBs I feel that its definitely a tool worth having.

You've got to be careful when you put 2 bikes together!! They start breeding and the next thing you know you'll have a barn full. If you take part of a 550 and part of a 750 you could end up with an 836cc in the family!

What kind of bike did your tank come off of? I picked up a Motion Pro Sync Pro for $70.00 w/ free shipping off ebay a couple of weeks ago. Love your girls.
