Damn old bike might have been given to me but it sure knows hot to nickel and dime me til I'm broke and then some. Fork seals leaking on my leg this time? Any recommendations on certain brand that might be better than factory Honda?

I know how you feel. I tell people I paid $300 for my bike, and when they ask me how much I've spent on it so far all I can say is "it's complicated".

As far as seals go you're not going to find any better than oem honda. If you're having a recurring leaking problem it is likely a knick in the fork tube

There is a trick with 35mm camera film to clean the debris out, but might cost just as much the seals which usually are under 15 bucks.  Sorry can't make a recomendation as I see it they are just generic parts.  So long as the ID, OD, and thickness of the seal is correct you should be ok.

I doubt Honda make the oil seals themselves. Use a top quality brand and avoid Chinese makes.

As was said before ... unless the fork tubes are in great shape with no gouges, scratches, or pits ... then they will leak no matter what seals you put on.

OEM Honda seals will be better than most of the seals out there.
You really are going to compare 40 year old OEM seals to something completely new? Really??

They sure look like great shape, thinking the 30 year old factory seals we just too damn old and ready for retirement

sure you can. There are definitely better seals out there, especially when dealing with less than perfect 35+ year old forks. I found a set with 3 lips, two oil lips and a dust seal. They don't leak like the OEM.

Just wondering if a company came along with a new and improved design that might be better

As others have said, even the best quality seals will be ruined quickly if the fork tubes are nicked, corroded, bent, etc. so check them carefully for issues before installing new seals.

As far as a better design, one thing I've noticed about many aftermarket seals, is that the gator spring that applies pressure is not always the same size as the factory original, in most cases it is a bit larger in diameter, which doesn't push against the shaft (fork seal in this case) as much as it should.  When new, this isn't necessarily an issue, but as the seal ages, the rubber shrinks, and that's when they stop pushing and start leaking.

So, before installation, I remove and compare the diameters of the new and old seal gator springs.  If the replacement spring is a bit too big, I carefully unwind the ends, trim off 5mm or so (don't over do it, and always cut from the non-tapered end) and carefully wind the ends back together, thereby reducing the diameter and increasing the pressure of the seal on the shaft.  I noticed a dramatic improvement in seal life once I started checking and trimming seal gator springs.

Just put new seals in those forks.
Why spend hundreds or a thousands for new forks?

No one wants to fix anything anymore. Buy and throw away.

Yep lucky I will put new seals in or throw the hole bike off a cliff whichever is more convenient when I wake up tomorrow lol

As said before I can't see any nicks gouges pits scratches or anything wrong with these so seals will be my try

i buy all my fork seals from a plumbing supply house that specializes in pumps for boilers and heaters. They are about $10 for the pair, made by federal mogul. The trick is, bring the seal in, don't ever say the word motorcycle, and just say 'i need two of these"

That trick works great, worked auto parts for a few years and others I worked with would say no we don't have that for ??? Cause it aint a car part. Thats where I'd step in and try my damnedest to find something

I am lucky we have a local bearing and seal supplier for industry that also likes old motorcycles.  They don't mind hunting for alternative bearings or seals if you have OD, ID and Height.  I try to spend as many of my repair/tinkering dollars there as I can.

The best way to test for nicks or gouges is the old nylon hoisery test, if it doesn't catch when you run it up and down the tube you should be good to go. Unless the last PO that decided to old cut off part of a pop can and stuff it in the fork seal is somehow a good idea and it wears a vertical groove in your tube then it is new tube time and no new fork seal will help that problem.

You said that they're leaking all over your leg? Reminds me of a 750 with bad gators I repaired once. When I opened the lower fork drain, grey fluid and water shot across the garage. Water had seeped into the forks over the years. That leads me to ask what fluid is in your forks and how much of it>

PO had just changed the seals last year, put it in upside down, it's all better now. New seals, went ahead and changed a few other things today while I was in the mood
