new guy with a question
« on: April 05, 2014, 06:43:57 PM »
A great friend of the family saw me on my bike at the gas station and asked me to come over and check out his Sportster.  I cruised over and helped him load his bike on the trailer, he's 75 and still riding but doesn't work on his own bike.  I believe it needs a set of plugs and a little carb work but he was dead set on it going to the Harley shop.  After talking about bikes for an hour he tells me he has an old Honda in the basement and I need to take it home with me.   I wasn't expecting much but he promised me it was pretty nice.  He pulled the sheet off the bike and here it is.

It looks really nice.  It does have a small puncture in the seat, a cracked rear fender and some rust in the tank.  It has 21k miles but hasn't been plated in 12 years.  I need to give him something for the bike and it will probably be a couple of old guns I have.  Is the bike worth a grand??  He's a great guy and I don't want to take advantage of him.

Thanks,  T4

Here's what I was riding.  It was a basket when I got it.

The pipes are clean and he has the title.  The title says 1970 but he believes it's actually a 69.

Mate that's worth well more than a grand, go look on ebay , see what there going for. Here in Oz that would pull $5 or $6000 easy!
We are importing them from the States by the ship load.
That for a couple of guns, you sure you didn't hold him up with said guns! ;D

Thanks.  The Ambassador runs really well.
Ya, it is the only pic.  It was kinda dark and cluttered next to 3 old snowmobiles.  I do recall that there was a little black paint peeling on the triple tree but all the chrome looked great and I didn't notice any dents.  The rust in the tank sux.

I'm thinking more Wollongongwolf... but need a bit more info.  Depending on when it was made in 69 I think your looking at 10g plus.
It's like a minty barn find from what i can see but I can't see enough to tell if it's sand cast.

Lots of guys know more that me about them hang a bit until you get some more knowledgeable guys to see this post. ;)

Yes I agree with you fuzzy, can't see it properly in the pic, but a rough one will bring 5 or 6 grand easy here, but you see them over 10 all the time. The beauty of that one it looks original and all there as it came from the factory. If it is original, should stay that way. They are only original once!

Don't worry about it being converted to a Cafe bike.  I like the original look.  If I can get it running I'll clean her up and ride.

Might be worth $5K in Oz, but would cost $2k to get it there from MI.

Get the VIN number, that will determine the value.

True , but depending on the condition, could be worth much more.if it's any good, still a profit in it. It was only a few years ago,you could of made fortune importing bikes from the States, Honda 4's, Z900, TT,XT 500's and the list goes on were going for a song over there. Now so many shipped, prices are going up in the States also.
There are container loads of bikes coming into OZ, even I bought one in. 25 year old bike with 1200 miles, that would never happen here due to the weather, we ride all year and ride them to death. No heated garages here.
For a couple of useless guns, looks like a steal to me.

Do some research and just get it, its a very desirable model. Try to be a little fair with the old guy though he may not be aware of its value. Ever sell it let me know over here in Kalamazoo.  PS-The fuel petcock is on in the reserve tank position  ;) Probably empty anyways.
