650 clutch springs as heavy duty 550 clutch springs?
« on: July 21, 2013, 01:17:58 PM »
Could I use them?  Would they work?  Would they be heavy duty, a direct replacement for the original 550 springs or...?

I have a set and my clutch slips under certain conditions.  If I could use what I have and that'd be great. I lack the shop/skills to put the whole 650 clutch in the 550, based on what I've seen on here.

Thanks!

As far as I'm aware the 650 clutch springs are similar compression strength to the 550.... The difference is in the gearing which turns the clutch FASTER .. therefore making it able to transmit higher power.

the speed of the clutch has nothing to do with its torque carrying capacity, its its frictional coefficient and the clamping strength of the assembly, put some 650 springs and 500/550 ones side by side,,youll have to be sure the 650 ones dont bind up when compressed in the 550 housing.

you didnt have to,what does transmit more power equate to?

Thanks guys!  I'll give it a go as soon as I have some time and report the result.

Dave the 650 has a different primary ratio to the 500 and 550's , this reduces the load on the clutch and makes it able to transmit more power without slipping ;) I don't think they actually changed the clutch that much though ;D

i know what your saying true but the actual limit of the clutches capabilty dosent change, its just getting a lower input, the internal primary ratio on the 500 and 550 is different aswell to reduce the load the clutch sees.

Yeah the clutch spins faster on the 650, this reduces the torque load on the clutch but allows it to tansfer more HP.  Just to clarify for those reading who may not understand completely.  Horsepower is calculated by multiplying torque (in ft/lbs) by the rpm, then divide by 5252.  Therefore if the clutch spins quicker the torque load is lower and torque is what makes the clutch slip. ;D

si amigo, the 550 had a lower final drive ratio aswell, this decreases the load on the clutch, then they just increased the primary ratio to bring the total overall to the same as the 500 was, this lessened the load on the clutch,as far as you need street just using genuine new springs has worked better for me than aftermarket "heavy duty"ones i felt i could crush easier between my thumb and index finger than old used stock ones,if your clutch is slipping and wont adjust out id take it apart and deglaze the steels and probably replace the frictions, have a look at the cable aswell.
