550 Caliper questions (banjo bolt) PART NUMBERS ADDED
« on: May 17, 2005, 08:45:08 PM »
I'm finally getting around to swappng my original rubber brake lines on my 76 550F this weekend.  I have all new stainless goodrich lines that I will be installing.

Question is will a standard banjo bolt fit into the caliper.  From the looks of it, it is longer than what screws into the caliper now.  also, if needed, can a banjo bolt be shortend?

If you have upgraded to stainless, what have you done?

Thanks

Curious. Where did you buy your Goodrich hoses? I'm in the market.

Hello,

in reference to your last question, I have upgraded to stainless on my CB750K3. I have Universal Russell Braided Lines, these attach to Russell Banjo fittings (same configuration as stock) and I used New Stock Honda Banjo Bolts available from my local Honda Dealer.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Lou.

Chris, what are the Goodrich part numbers that you ordered?  I've also been trying to upgrade my brake hose, but I've been nervous about ordering them because I'm not sure of the fitting type.  I have a '78 CB550K.

Thanks,
Justin

Yep you can safely shorten banjos. Here's a hint too for even more improved braking on a 550 - take the sliding pad in the piston side of the caliper, and with a file or emery paper remove every hint of paint from around the side of the pad base. Many manufacturers slop on this thick gloopy stuff nowadays, and it means that the pad can hang up in its well, and thus both drag on the disc when it doesnt need to, AND feel very wooden as when you pull the lever youre forcing the pad out aganst its too-tight fit in the well. You'll be amazed at what this timy tweak with do.

Justin, I put the new lines on over the weekend.  I got all my parts from here.  http://www.sideroadcycles.com/ImportedMotorcycles/ImportBrakeLines/ImportBreakLines.html

The cost was alittle around $100 bucks.  I used the universal #3 lines.  I used 1 9" upper line  and 1 18" lower line and removed the stock lower hardline from the system.  I ordered new banjo bolts also.  2 35degree fittings and 2 straight fittings.  I used a straight banjo fitting at the master cyl, a 35 degree at the 3 way connector, a straight fitting at the 3way going to the caliper (going to swap out for another 35degree though and a 35degree at the caliper.  I had to cut down a banjo bolt to fit in the caliper and then used a nut to correct the threads.  Everything worked out great and went together really fast.  Braking is much improved.

This is a copy of my order form to them.

This Order is for the following Parts:

Hello,

from what I read, we have almost done the same mod to our bikes. Except that I've retained the "rigid" line into the caliper.

I waited for almost one year for my local bike parts dealer to order and receive an adapter that allows me to connect the Russell line to the rigid line. (I wanted to maintain the "original" look at the caliper)

When you have the time, could you post some photos of your set-up? What I'm looking fo mainly is what your caliper looks like.

Thanks for the info.
Cheers,
Lou.

Is that part you waited for the Conic Reverser mentioned in reply by Justin_NJ?   I also saw this part on the site where I bought my parts at.  Adaptor Fitting #3 Male to10x1.25 Japanese Female 226-41470

Goto this site  http://www.flanderscompany.com/RussellSearch.html   click on Russel Hydrolic Parts,  its toward the bottom.  I was thinking of using this in order to keep the hardline.  May work.

That's exactly the part I needed. I had even given them the part number and it still took a year to get here.

They told me that they couldn't just order that one part, they needed to make up a larger order to save on shipping or something like that. Being that I'm in a small town with only ONE motorcycle dealer, I simply waited for them to place that order. As it is, I had to buy 2 as they are sold in blister packs in quantity of 2, and wouldn't just sell me one. That ONE dealer is a Honda dealer.....so I try and keep on their good side.  ;D

Have to get my OEM parts somewhere, don't I?

Cheers,
Lou.
