I've been slighted.....
« on: August 09, 2006, 10:57:23 PM »
Sent my application form off to the organisers of a bike show to be held in November.

I had a reply today along with my check and a letter saying that they didn't have a category for Japanese bikes. Don't come.

There were 17 categories such as best evolution, best American, best British, best Norton, best performance, best shovel etc etc.

Is this 1980's thinking?

If I shine up the K0 and park up by the entrance I'm going to look like the proverbial "spare prick at the wedding" but where the f*ck are these people comming from?      We're living in the 3rd millennium!!

Rejection is hard to swallow. Personally I'm not interested in taking my bike to shows. I don't need anybody judging it, it's just a bike I enjoy riding, and answering flattering comments from people who know what I ride. What I can't understand is that you are willing to pay in order to have your bike entering the show? THEY should be paying you so you let them admire your bike. At least that's what happens in the museums.

Good points Raul. What I am saying is that these people are rejecting about 40 years of motorcycling innovation and development. If they want to gloat over the glory days of Norton,  BSA and Harley Davidson then I say let them get on with it!!

You could write them a letter saying just that, you know, sort of getting the last word.. and making your point. ;)

Mate, go park it out the front for free and enjoy the comments from those that understand the significance of your ride.

Thanks for your input Bob...My thoughts are that I will just let them stew in their "flathead", "shovelhead", juice. I really don't give a #$%*. I get my ego massaged every 3rd or 4th stop. I didn't buy the K0 for anyone but myself, but it's nice that people acknowledge the bike now and again, it's just a nice part of the package that I didn't expect but sincerely appreciate. As Jeff says, Peace....

The Bike that damn near killed Harley? Golly gee why would they object to that?

My two cents? How horribly short sighted to ignore such a large segment of the Motorcycle community.

Always vote with your pocketbook. I personally never gibe my money to people like that.

Thanks peter, kghost. Maybe I should go down there and ask the guy with the 2006 Nighty-rider "is that based on the 1946 shovel or the 1952 panty-head?"   or other stuff.

I'm not bitter..just amused     :D

....best American, best British, best Norton, best performance....

So they don't think Nortons were produced in Britian? And they are holding a show? Aught to be fun.

But how can you have best performance from the above categories. While I will say some of those Nortons were pretty quick in their day, 12 second quarter mile times are as old as the bikes. Or are we back to that 48 cylinder thingie or the twin 6-71'ed abortion-on-toast thing?

Hi Mick, 6pk...one of my favorite reads is "The Classic Motor Cycle" (The heart and soul of the classic world), a U.K. magazine. They are thrilled to death with all things British (not that there's anything wrong with that) and obscure Italian, German, Lithuanian, French and Bulgarian two stroke marques that lasted 18 months or so but nary an acknowledgement of Sochiro Honda's contribution to motorcycling. Kawasaki rarely gets a mention. Yamaha, forget it. Bridgestone, nothing. Those Japanese makers are over 35 years old so in my eyes that makes them classics. There's something not right going on here!!

The Classic Motorcycle is owned by the same people as Classic Motorcycle Mechanics.

They don't piss on each other's patch...

There's a debate going on in CMM at the moment as they had an article on the first (92) Fireblade as a "Classic".  Some of the readers were a bit upset.

Hi Steve, Oh dear. And what about the VFR400  NC30..   ??    The poor mans RC......It just goes on and on I'm afraid. I must say that every thing I read about the Triumph 675cc makes me want to re-mortgage the house and park one up in the garage though. Looks as if you got that one right.

CMM have featured the VFR750 (84) as a classic and no-one moaned about that.
They've also done articles on the RC30 (but not the NC30/35 to my knowledge)

Agreed, they're afraid you'll take best of show. Ride past real slow and give them the throttle blip.

Could it be that your bike just isn't old enough?  Many organisations are strict about cut-offs when designating terms like "classic", "vintage", etc.   Some people in the Vintage BMW club had heart attacks when the powers-that-be decided to include '70s Beemers.  Obviously the first step towards the downward spiral.
The other thing is, of course, that thee is still antipathy towards things Japanese.  Also, though, many organisations only think about British and American marques and don't include German or Italian bikes, either.

Have your own party and don't invite them.

They just KNOW, what will happen if you bring your stunning K0 along................
People will gravitate away from the "Birmingham six" (so to speak) and stand around in groups, (so big it takes bouncers to handle) surrounding your bike....
What happens next can be a little intimidating to the brit fetishists. ( as with all fetishists, their whole life has been spent on totall obsessional behaviour with birmingham made iron at the centre of their particular fetish, TOO the exlusion of all else, regardless of beauty, quality, or general importance to others) You have to rememer, that fetishists, cannot actually see , hear or think of ANYTHING other than their particular ( and often very narrow) adopted topic...
This goes a little way to explain ( as a typical analogy) why "Gimps" can often be seen wearing a full face leather mask, with a zip or two to block out the senses that we would usually keep......
Its the same thing, the "Gimp" wants to focus his attention on his "Mistress" to the exlusion of all else/others, he doesnt need to hear properly, breath properly, or even move properly, and to this aim, he often allows himself to be restricted in movement..........
If asked, the "Gimp" will readilly admit, that he sees, hears, smells, wants and desires ONLY his chosen mistress, no matter how ugly , overweight, old , poorly dressed and useless she may actually be.......( see the similarity with  "brit bike-tunnel-vision" yet?) TO the exlusion of all others / everything else.........
Of course there is NO logic in this, by its very nature, its Illogical, ( you dont see a "gimp" mask with vulcan ear-holes do you now?) and its pointless trying to understand it, this type of behaviour was instigated in childhood, and cannot be altered by normal means.   (probably by a "nanny" or "governess" type figure, bending over the crib in her high heels, corset, and fully fitted stockings, and chastising the infant for being inadequate / useless/ good- for - nothing etc)
So, really, the only thing that could be done at shows that dont want you and your beautifull K0, would be to make some money by selling the people there -gimp masks, after all they must need them.

Anyways, back to "what happens next" in the big groups surrounding your bike, (that have now swollen even more by the way since i started this reply!)
Is this;;;
some of the "not -  totally -  dedicated - prospective - yet - to be - gimps" start to go into the well known "Honda induced trance" and are swept back in their minds eye to the 1970's, when people were faced with a very, very, difficult choice in the bike buying department...............
The choice was this;
Do I buy this bike that looks dated, leaks oil, breaks down often, has poor after sales service,an even poorer spares catologue, is losing at the track, is being thrashed at MIRA.................

OR do I buy this Innovative, beautifully stunning, extremely quick, well painted in modern looking candy colours, oil tight, head turning inline FOUR, for less money with a better back up system for parts BIKE.????   BUT, that question is very much like an "imperfect fraction" and can of course be simplified....to the much easier question; " do I need a gimp mask under my helmet?"
Theres room for all bikes in the biking world, not just one type,(thats gotta be fascist.)
Your bike is so well looked after, cleaned, maintained, and a brilliant classic, if others cant see that F*** em, cos there will ALLWAYS be folk that will appreciate it and tell you so!

In my own experience...
It wasn't a Previous Owner who didnt know what he was doing that messed up your bike, it was The Previous owners mate who THOUGHT that HE did.

See now this is the problem with stock exhaust!  If you have aftermarket, you could pull out the baffles and wail on the throttle to show them what a REAL engine sounds like! ;D

Kinda like car/antique/muscle car shows.
I have some friends which are all about paying $15-$20 to enter a show - sit their all day - and HOPEFULLY win a 12'' trophy that costs $5 to make. Not my cup of tea, but to each their own.
95% of those cars never get driven, and the owners spend more time detailing the mufflers then driving them, which bothers me.

I drive my car - thats why  bought it !

Don't worry about getting the NO for the show my man, just enjoy your bike by actually riding it...

Tell you what: park the bike at the show entrance, with a sign saying "CB750K0, the bike that changed the motorcycle world. Excluded to participate in this show because it cannot be categorized", along with their rejection letter. It must be amusing to see people's reaction when reading it.
