Hi Seabass,

go to the Naked Goldwing site -   http://www.ngwclub.com

Hang out there for a while and do visit the Randakk site  -  a treasure trove of info on early wings.

A commuter bike?  -  having owned a 1976 GL1000 for four years, a Goldwing would not be my first choice for commuting - unless you are doing a lot of highway miles.   The old ones, like the new ones, are great highway bikes.  Around town, not so good.   Carbs can be an issue.

If you still want an old Goldwing, do your homework at the Randakk site so you don't buy one with a bad engine.

Wings are great for commute if MOST of it is Hiway!!! Wings are hard to maneuver around in a lot of tight turns and parking lots.. Great bikes , most had carb problems!!

If you run ti NAKED , makes for a great ride!!! Check last picture!

You don't want a '75.  And if you're hung up on having a kick starter, you don't want a '79 or newer.

And I don't care what anyone says- they belong on this forum. It is a Single Over Head Cam engine.

I don't know why he wouldn't want a '75. The 75-77 are the superbikes of the the GoldWing family. The later bikes became more and more touring oriented and you can't get a factory naked GoldWing after '84.

That said, I also wouldn't recommend a GoldWing for around town commuting. They are heavy, wide, and not particularly fuel efficient, I get mid 20's around town and high 30's on the highway. Mine happens to have a fairing and full bags, which doesn't help make it any lighter or narrower, but even if it didn't it would be an inferior city commuter to the CB550 I sold to buy it. That's why I am working to complete the build of another CB550.

To my mind the 550 is the ideal commuter. Relatively light, nimble, easy to park, good gas mileage, and still plenty of power for highway riding. My GL is better for multihour touring, but as an all around bike the 550 is better.

Thanks guys lots of solid advice.I need something that I can carry my tools and lunch to work so thinking my cb550 with a cafe seat wont work out to well. I currently have a 05 Victory that I commute with but am selling It to fund and complete a 69 fastback mustang project that I have.My Victory weighs around 600lbs and has a ridiculous 250 rear tire so im kinda  used to heavy hard to maneuver bikes. Are there any other bikes  I should consider that can be had for under $2000 that suit my needs. Thanks

Is a 550 off the table? A pair of nice vintage bags or a rack would give it plenty of storage/load opportunities for commuting or small trips.
It is capable and like has been said, an enjoyable bike.

How heavy is the tool box you carry?

I owned a 77 naked wing and loved it. It was terrible on gas though. I have a 2001 BMW R1200c right now, and it handles worst than my wing.

I love my bike for around town. I ride it everyday.
Load it up and hit the road. No problems.
I own 4 enough said. Ha Ha.
I get around 45mpg.

All about the balance.

I vote for the 750 with a nice rack

Except that the 750 costs 3x as much as a older wing at least around here. A decent 750 is at least $3000 you can get old wings that still run for a lot less than that.

I was looking at a beautiful 75 naked wing (GL1000) except for the factory saddle bags. Came in the candy blue green and had the narrow oem seat. Super sweet bike. It was down in Portland for $1500. But I passed. Kind of regret that.

Early wing, make sure it has new timing belts and lube the splined joints on the driveshaft. both ends.  go get you one.

Steve-o you are the master at finding deals! You should haul that to the west coast and make some bank. $3000 would be a quick turn around.

I'm a good shopper!   Not ready to sell this one, just put on a newly painted (blue) tank and side covers as well as a minty stock seat.
