Did he look kind of "Rockabilly" and have lots of patches on his jacket?

Had a helmet on, silver or grey I think and a plain leather riding jacket.

It was set up as a mild cafe sort of like my 350f in avatar. Red K tank, chrome fenders, nice fiberglass hump on the tail. 4 into 1 chrome exhaust. Probably drag bars from the way he was sitting. Nice looking ride and it sounded like it ran very well. At least from what I could hear over the HD noise.

I know just the guy...

Sturgis is a long way from Cali though

Might be just who you are thinking of. Could be running stealth on the lastest project.

bikes of most types go to sturgis. I have heard the rockets are less than well received. Our bikes and others of our years do seem to get some respect from the older riders.

After being a HD/V-Twin rider for years, and then going over to the SOHC/Honda side, I have noticed that these bikes
get allot of street credit. The rocket guys see them as the grandfather of what they are riding, and the majority of the HD guys
see them as a blast from the past / bike of their youth. The people who look down on them have small cocks and fat wives, and never acknowledge anything but what they own.

I'll ride my CB750 into any bike show/bar/gathering and I always have a crowd around it..

Well my wife isn't fat....does that tell you anything?   :D :D  It's funny you should talk about the Harley guys looking at our bikes as a blast from the past.  After I left the Wednesday night cruise last week, I was on North Ave in Villa Park going west, and this guy on a Harley bagger pulls up next to me.  I'm thinking that the usual rev-the-piss-out-of-it don't acknowledge my presence whole shot was coming, but no, he looks over at me, nods, then looks at the bike, and ear-to-ear grin hits his face.  Totally shocked me.  He kept going on "that bike is So COOOOL!!DAAAaam I love itThat's so F*^$kin cool....."  etc.  Same #$%* alll over at the next light.  Blew me away.  I did notice he had a dealer plate on the bike, and I asked him which dealer.  He works at the HD in Berwin.
You see, there IS hope in this world.

Every single time I stop my bike somewhere for gas, food, or a rest someone comes up to me and asks what year it is, etc. My bike isn't even in that good of shape. It's pretty rough, in fact. I can't imagine the kind of response you all get with your fancy, fixed-up bikes.

Hasn't been like that for years. I've been going for about 15 continuous years now, to camp with old buddies from all over the US that get together every year out there. Hell, I was out there 30 years ago when it was the real deal. The guys I feel sorry for, or laugh at depending on my mood are the morons that spend 40 grand on some POS they can't ride around the block. I'll GUARENTEE you if I parkede my 350f on Main Street it would get lots more attention than the OCC bike beside it, and 99.9% would be positive. I haven't had it out there yet, but I think I will next year. Those things are a dime a dozen there, nobody even blinks when they go by.

That 750 Cafe was really clean. Nice red paint. Seemed to be a plain red paint job. No decals etc that I saw. I passed him on I-90 in heavy traffic headed east into Sturgis Wed (??)( LOTS of beer) afternoon then lost track of him on Lazelle. Didn't see him after that. Saw 3 other 750s. One 77/78 K on the side of the road and 2 other early Ks.

Another pretty tame party by most accounts except for 2 Hells Angels shooting up 5 Outlaws and 5 crash deaths by Tuesday. Many types of bikes but mostly Harleys. Saw quite a few foreign plates along with all the north American riders. Fantastic music line ups!! All in all most had a great time.

I dunno mate, I'm not convinced. I've been watching American Chopper on DVD every night for the last two weeks (A mate loaned me a couple of boxed sets) and those bikes are incredible! Nothing wrong with the 350F, but I know what I'd be more interested in.................. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I was a little beered up when I wrote that Terry, but the point is that there are so many high dollar  customs there, nobody really bothers to pay much attention to them after they've seen the first thousand or so. It's the unique stuff that gets the looks, whether it be a sohc cafe or an unrestored 50's panhead or whatever.

I've never been to Sturgis, might do it one day, but I can tell you my experience up here is that when I pull into a parking lot full of HD's and crotch rockets on either my 750k0 or my 350 twin I get an aweful lot of attention, not because my bikes are so awesome or anything like that but they are different. Everyone up here over 30 rides an HD and everyone under 30 is on a crotch rocket. I don't really care what anybody else rides or about getting lots of attention but people seem to love the old hondas when they see them. Noticing ALOT more cafes around, next big trend I think. :)
