Cam Positioning

I'm trying to get my cam positioned on my 79 cb650. I'm having trouble getting the sprocket holes to align with the threaded cam holes. Once the cam is positioned I can't get enough slack on the chain to position the sprocket. I'm sure I'm doing it wrong. Any ideas?

You're probably on the right track. Try to inch worm the chain tooth by tooth on the sprocket. But then I never worked on a 650 though.

What goldarrow said, jump the chain a tooth over the gear and try again. Then if you  did it like me, jump it two teeth the right direction and try that.

Make sure you're not 180 degrees off. Or that you installed the gear backwards.

Retract the cam chain tensioner all the way before trying to install the chain. That usually helps.

To retract the cam chain tensioner would I loosen it or tighten it?
