Original paint
« on: August 20, 2013, 05:22:12 PM »
As the summer winds down I'm thinking about winter projects. The PO painted my tank and side covers blue and put a decal on the tank that, along with the paint, is already peeling off.

Does Honda have a website where you enter your VIN and see what the original color was? I have my list of winter maintenance. This is a cosmetic repair. Like, start searching for the proper tank on ebay. I'm just not that into the blue. Thanks fellas.

There is no color designation on the VIN.  Depending on what bike you have, there were only 2 or 3 choices.  Look on the bottom of the tank for a hint.

what year and model is your bike?

Are you sure the bodywork is original? If it was replaced at some point there is no way of knowing what the original colors were.

Do you have any old registrations of the bike? Sometimes they will tell you what the color was.

At the end of the day - if you want to know what the original color was on the bodyset, you can always take a can of aircraft stripper to it and keep going through the layers until you get to the bare metal/plastic.

She's a 75 550f. The PO sprayed it pretty good, so there's no remnants if the original color. But aircraft sprayer sounds good. I want to strip it soon anyway. I don't suppose autozone sticks aircraft stripper?...

Try some of the local hardware stores, Home Depot used to sell BIX aircraft stripper so it is possible a local hdwe store may sell it...Larry

Both those colors are candy colors, otherwise known as three stage paint. The color comes from a transparent "candy" layer created by mixing pigment into clear. If you are replicating it you need to find someone who can shoot candy. Most custom paint shops can do it, but it ain't cheap and your average joe blow body shop may not be up to snuff.

What do you know... The color it was painted is damn near candy sapphire blue. Well thought, still poorly executed. Most of it looks good, but where it's cracking it's really cracking. Bigger fish to fry right now...
