Uneven upper fork tubes
« on: August 24, 2013, 02:40:57 PM »
Hi there.  First post and I need some help!

I recently purchased a 77 CB750F.  It was mostly rebuilt as a cafe racer and runs great (rebuilt carbs, new ignition/coils, new cables, new rear suspension, yoshimura replica exhaust, carpy's F/supersport seat and a few other items).  It came with some cheaper clip-ons that I'm trying to remove in favor of Norman Hyde M bars.  I loosened the top and lower fork tube clamps while the bike was up on jack stands.  I also pulled the top triple clamp off.  The bars came off with no issue, but I noticed as I went to reassemble that the tops of each fork tube are at different heights.

I stopped any work right there for fear of bending my lower triple clamp or something worse.  Prior to this the top of the upper forks were even and I didn't have any issues with the front end as far as I could tell.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you can slowly lower the bike to put weight on the front tire ,with the lower clamps loose. The tubes will slide up in the upper clamp then slowly raise the bike so the front tire will drop till the tubes are lined with the top clamps!

You could have a look to see if the springs are the same length....

Loosen up the wheel axle to make sure there is no tension anywhere - with upper and lower loose of course.  Than set up the tube height to be even on top, tighten up the lower triple, than axle, and upper bracket as the last.  Go over it one more time, make sure all is tight.

You may want to put straight edge across the top of the forklegs, if the previous post advice does not even it out.
