Removing field windings from alternator cover
« on: September 17, 2013, 04:53:23 PM »
I want to polish my alternator cover on the polish wheel. I've got the alternator cover off the motor and have removed all screws that hold the field coil in place. The field coil seems immovable. How hard should it be to get out? And once out how hard is it to get it back in?

a little corrosion may be holding it on?it should come off with a little nudge, its not magnetic,it is an electro magnet though.

After 39 years I'm guessing corrosion.

It's a 750 and yes it looks like the photo. Thanks for posting.

How easy is it to get out? Well, mine wasn't easy. BTW, there's nothing magnetic in there until it starts turning. It took me an hour and a half to get mine out. No corrosion, just a very snug fit. I would move the inner piece to the side so I could get my fingers under one side of the field coil. Then move to the other side and did that at least a hundred times. I turned the the unit upside down, held it in my left hand and beat on the other side with a neoprene hammer. All that did was re seat the field coil. Not cool.

I sprayed Ballistol, the slickest product known to mankind, onto the four mating surfaces. It had to help but progress was so slow who knows how much.

Anyway it's out and I can get on with polishing the cover.

Thanks everybody for the input.

the field becomes magnetic once the key is switched on,the magnetic field gets stronger once it starts turning.
