CB500 / 550 Air Cleaner Rubber Cover now available
« on: September 16, 2013, 05:40:16 PM »
Hi All,

The rubber air cleaner cover (aka the Gman Cover  ;D ), part # 17315-323-000 is now available from Clauss Studios at the following link (scroll to bottom of page)...

http://www.claussstudios.com/id45.html

So go there and grab one for your bike as they have previously been "unobtainium". Thank you to Greg Clauss and the Gman for their help in making this happen. http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=125083.msg

I'm looking forward to finally getting one for my restoration.

Great news! This is such an important part of the air cleaner and has been "imposible" to find, up to now. Price is good, too; I spent over double that for my NOS part from ebay...

Now if they'd do the element cover seal as well we'd be in business!

Thanks for sharing this!

The cover looks great! I'll be sending you a spare element cover seal so we can get that reproduced as well. It's great to find someone willing to reproduce these important but hard to find parts so our bikes can be set up the way they were meant to be!

Thanks for all of the efforts, Red...

Glad to help out. Thanks for the teamwork in supplying the parts. I wish we could find someone to make some of the original trumpet exhausts!  ::)

I don't believe Claus would do them since they are made of sheet metal. But I see at least 3 on ebay - part# 83500-286-030B.

Maybe you could talk FB into making some out of plastic like the side covers? There is a market if he can make them and they hold up to the weight of the tools on rough roads without breaking.

I'm prepared to send in the element cover seal, but there's actually one more item that would make the "airbox kit" complete, and that's the filter box drain tube cap

I have a near-new cap thanks to Gman (he is da man!) that I can include. Would you be willing to go out on another limb and ask your source if he would be willing to repro that, as well? This is another part that's impossible to find. If you're willing to ask, I can send it along with the seal; otherwise just the seal will go.

Once again, thanks for your efforts, reddyvv! You da man, too!

The other tube fitting that necks down on the airbox is also going to be needed as dealer supply is drying up.

The 350F tool box and cover are plastic. The ones you see on Ebay are for the twin cylinder CB350's.

David Silvers Spares has them. Is that where you got yours? They look new.

Thanks for the info. BTW, I borrowed that picture from the web. My Candy Bacus Green bike had the tool tray and cover but I sold that bike 8 years ago. My current Ruby Red one is missing these parts so it looks like I'm going to order for DS.

Hi Ron,

I was answering msgs from my phone and did not see this post. Let me check and I'll get back to you tomorrow. What I ended up using on my bike was a vacuum tube cap from the auto parts store which fits quite well. But an OEM copy is always better I guess.

RAFster, on the part I have that is just a larger diameter of the same rubber tube rather than a separate part like the end cap. So I don't think that there is an individual fitting that can be copied, it would have to be the entire tube. Am I right?

Just ordered one for my 75 CB550K.  Thanks for the post about availability! That's one of the things that makes this site so great - bike dudes helping other bike dudes (and dudettes)

Definitely kudos to reddyvv for getting these things repro'd.  I actually have a spare hose tip or two, which I could send Clauss Studios if needed (if he's willing).

And, what is the element cover seal?

And, what is the element cover seal?

It's the rubber gasket that fits around the "box" on the bottom of the element cover

Here's a brief description of how it works:

"...All of this is kept separate from the rest of the filter case by a rubber U-channel seal that fits around the element cover "box" where the foam element lives. It slides onto the stamped metal lip of the funnel, encircling it and sealing off the air filter chamber. Just like the cap for the drain tube, it helps insure that all of the vacuum being generated by the element cover is directed toward evacuating the crankcase, not being used to pull in extraneous air from the filter box. In addition, the seal acts as a buffer between the punching metal and the base of the element cover "box" so that they don't slide against each other."

I've sent one in to have it reproduced, so we'll have it available soon (hopefully!).
