Engine break in 78 750k
« on: September 16, 2013, 08:40:55 PM »
I tried the search first. It doesn't seem to like any combination referring to breaking in your engine.. LOL

Anyone have an owners manual? Just replaced the cam tensioner and roller, rings, valve seals, gaskets, o rings and lapped valves... Would like to be nice to her after this....

Please note I have never broke in any engine before, so being specific would be lovely! Thanks guys!

Piston rings are the only thing on your list that require a break in procedure; do several full throttle roll-ons in 3rd and 4th gears, keeping the RPMs below 6000. The load should help seat the rings. Fresh pistons with a bore and/or fresh bottom end bearings have different requirements.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Thanks scottly! Glad I mentioned what work I did now! How long do I do that for? Is there a certain amount of miles (KM's in my case) or for some many rides?

Don't labour the engine and follow the other recommendations for 500 miles then do an oil and filter change plus check all service items, run normally but not ragging it for a further 1.000 and do anothe oil and filter change then back to normal servicing
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Do that 3 or 4 times, and you should be good to go. Like I mentioned, pistons and bearings are different, especially pistons. They need to go through several heat cycles before being subjected to extreme use, due to the uneven expansion of the aluminum pistons. Any tight spots need to be worn in gradually, or heat from friction will cause more expansion, which creates more friction and heat, and so on.

Thanks to you both so much! I really appreciate it. Hopefully I will have her all back together in the next day or two and can begin my break in then!

Around town driving at different speeds and rpms is the best for break in.

Just getting on the freeway and going one steady speed is the worst for it.

Useless information !!!!
These engines are 40 years old.
They are not high tech modern engines.
I was a dealership mechanic at the time the bikes were manufactured.
I lived it.

When Honda made these bikes the first oil used was non detergent oil and at 500 miles they were then changed to regular oil. That is a fact.

Did you buy one of his music videos??? LOL

Useless information by too young of a person.

Nothing has changed really. When I bought my RR new in 2010, the break-in procedure prescribed by BMW is identical with what you posted above. And I cannot think of a more "high-tech modern" engine than that of the RR. It's like gravity: some things don't change despite advances in technology and DTC.
