Keihin smoothbore installation
« on: August 21, 2006, 06:35:18 AM »
I recently installed a set of Keihin CR smoothbores on my '78 750.  I am having some minor problems with the cables.  Has anyone installed these carbs ?  Maybe a few tricks to getting the cables adjusted correctly ?

dgfischer is right - the easiest way to install the cables is before you have mounted the carbs.  The cables mount very high and you have to bend them at quite an angle to fit them under the centre frame tube.  Because of the bend, make sure the rest of the cable routing is clear or you will get some binding.

Also make sure the slack adjuster on the one cable is turned all the way in (maximum slack). Sudco has shortened the screw in adaptors so the linkage does clear the frame backbone much better. Now....if they only cut a larger and deeper groove for the carb boot to sit in. ::)

Thanks for the welcome !! Cables have been installed on the CR's before installing on the bike.  Although these are new cables there appears to be too much cable in the housing.  There is 5" of PULL cable and about 2" of PUSH w/ the throttle closed at the carb end.  That is with the cables removed from the carbs.  I will try to attach a picture of this and wait for replies. ;D

Not that I can help with this one but.......

What size CR's are you using and what has been done to the engine?

Keep us informed of the outcome.

The Cr's are 29mm.  The engine is stock, no mods other than coils and ignition.  The Supplier that I purchased these from said they have never seen this problem, but here it is.  Doing a side by side w/ my stock set, the cable bracket is located in the front for the CR's and the back for the stock.  That would answer why the cable lengths have changed.

I have heard of a mod/repair kit for replacing cable ends.  Anyone seen/heard of it ?
