A 650 cam will fit and give more lift butt here is a tack issue.

thanks sam. trying to wrap my head around the physics of a cam... you can get more duration but not more lift by re-grinding the cam, right? or will they add new material and grind it to whatever you want? i'm thinking of following hondaman's suggestions and going with a bit more duration, so i guess that would work either way.

Megcycle cams. I'm running the mild street version in mine. It broadens the midrange and gives a little higher
top end yet keeps the bike managable on city streets. The mild street version doesn't require new strongers valve springs either.

Paul:

You get more lift when re-grinding a cam by reducing the base circle size.

it feals great. I have yet to be for lack of throttle when I need it. The bike is calm in the lower rpm ranges but when you get near 5000 it really start to kick in and keeps going well into 8500 and that's where I shift unless there's someone really on my tale on trying to beat me off a light.
I just got some new tires on it and hope to get it closer to the red line after I break them in. My previous tires were Chinshens and hard rubber with some dry rot so I had ridden fairly easy until I got the K81s on it.

Wonder how that would work on the 650...

jph550 or anyone that might know.

After installing that street cam - did you/do you have to make any adjustments?

jetting?
timing?
...

Or did you just drop it in like the stock cam?

Thanks.

More important is setting the cam up. Get yourself an adjustable cam sprocket and dial the cam in to the new specs.
If you want real performance send your head to Mike Rieck, super pistons, carbs, cams and exhaust all help in the search for power, but the real power comes from the ports and combustion chambers.

Have fun,  Sam.

         Terry,
What would you suggest running, in a web cam regrind? Any idea what the 650 cam (in a 550) would compare to as far as lift and duration? Just curious.

And a word to those not sure what a regrind is:
If I remember right the camshaft would be built up and then reground. I don't see how just grinding the cam would change lift. Think about it.   Later on.  Bill

They grind the base circle William, this is the part of the cam that you set your tappets against.
2mm off the bottom of the cam gives you 2mm extra lift.
Easy when you think about it ;) ;D

Sam,  Guess I just wasn't thinking when I said that. Isn't there a process where a camshaft is built up using a welding process and then reground, or am I thinking of something a crankshaft or what? I remember that from somewhere, I think.

the P.O. put the cam in and ported the head too. I'm not sure about the jetting or the installation procedure for that matter. My
The valve tappet adjustments are different than stock. .04 IN and .05 EX instead of .02 IN and .03 EX. this is to make up for the increased lift as described by oldfordguy and samcr750. Megacycles has this information listed on-line.
When tuning the bike I called Megacycles to ask about timing and they told me not to expect it to be any further than +/- 1º off of stock.
The P.O. also put a MAC 4-1 header/megaphone exhaust on. /the airbox is stock and plugs are D8EA. One colder than stock recommended. I haven't had the pleasure of pulling the carbs apart yet so I'm not sure of the jets. I'll keep my fingers crossed for the rest of the riding season.

hope this helps in the decision making.
peace

Your quite correct Billy, they are stellite welded, then reground to give different lift, duration and opening/closeing times.
