Yet another Amish rip-off
« on: February 19, 2014, 05:53:10 PM »
Tell you what, I am sick and tired of getting ripped off by the local Amish community.   If anyone remembers a couple years ago I had Melvin replace a zipper in my leather riding pants and he charged me the outrageous sum of $3 . Then a year or so ago Amos repaired my broken K0 carb bracket and took me for $5.  Well, this time Melvin hemmed another pair of my First Gear riding pants and had the nerve to ask for .50.  Yes, that is not a typo as he only wanted 50 cents to hem a pair of leather pants   The nerve of these guys...Larry

You'd think you'd learn your lesson by now?

Too bad they don't work on pink Hondas, it would be done for maybe $100?

Hell Id donate $3 just to see someone stitch in a new zipper in leather by hand.

There probably is a local  Amish motorcycle mechanic out there-when I bought my XL125K0 at a local auction I was bidding against a young Amish lad(he was wearing black not pink btw)

Actually boats,  I gave him ten when he asked for three, gave the aluminum guy ten when he asked for five and gave five when he asked for fifty cents.

One of the funniest visual sights I ever saw was in the waiting room of a local DutchWay restaurant.   There was a young Amish teenager in each of the five waiting chairs-------------each one(Amish not chair) had a cell phone and was texting like there was no tomorrow

That is filmed around here, never watched it but I've been told it is filmed right up the road,  not in Intercourse nor Blue Ball nor Bird In Hand nor Paradise though.

My understanding of the Amish is that they have sworn off technology as of some date centuries ago.  a friend went to Belize to go visiting with some  former Amish children who had become 'worldly.'  They were bird watching, and Binoculars were okay, cameras weren't.  Ford trucks were not allowed, but the transmission out of it was, and they  used it with a horse bridled and  walking in a circle hooked to a system that would mill grain.

I guess they kept the value of money the same as it was centuries ago, too.

Still don't drive a car but some of them own cars and hire an English(anyone other than Amish) to drive. That mostly applies to work vans though.  Almost all use cell phones in their business as well as electricity, just cannot use electricity in their house but if they do business in the house generated electricity is OK.  They have no problem with visiting the local bars, especially on a Sunday when football is on.  And you will never see a poor Amish as they are thrifty and hard working....Larry

Mennonites, Amish lite.
They made the best damn Yoder cinnamon rolls you ever tasted at the Carriage Crossing.

Most all of the farmer's markets and older bazaars/malls had stands where the Amish or Mennonites sold sticky buns.  Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmy....Larry

Had a really funny encounter riding through Lancaster County PA a bunch of years back, passing through those rolling hills where a lot of Amish and Mennonite people live. Came upon a couple of horse-drawn buggies coming in the other direction, the kind with the canopy backs for shade, one about 50 yards behind the other. In the first one were Father and Mother, looking Straight Ahead and not at all at me as I rode by, and in the second buggy was a young couple, hard to say how old, TOTALLY SUCKING FACE, completely oblivious to me or the horse that was plodding straight ahead following the other.

Caught me totally off guard and I just about laughed my ass off. Was probably about the only place they had any modicum of "privacy", in relative terms.

Young couple was probably in an open buggy, right?  Supposed to be a type of courting buggy so they can be seen if they start "sucking face".  Must say that I've never seen that...Larry

i remember AOL publishing story about what Amish cook and eat and they were surprised that they are not all overweight due to the rich food they eat.

Well, I guess working the field with horses and by hands kinda leans you out  ;D

What kind of a dumba$$ would be surprised at that?

Raising barns by hand also would sweat a few calories off I think.

Never saw it before, thought that was her.  thanks for posting it CR.  One thing about the Amish, besides putting copious quantities of fat and sugar in their foods, is they have a great sense of humor...Larry
