1975 CB550 K1 exhaust/ pods HELP
« on: June 12, 2011, 12:47:06 PM »
I am 16 years old and just finished building my 1975 CB550 K1 from the ground up and would like help now with tips on preferably a 4-1 exhaust and pods to see what would work best with this bike. My bikes engine is stock and has been recently rebuilt. I'm hoping with everyones experience on SOHC that I might be able to get some good feedback.

On one of the exhaust pipes there are multiple holes in it and is slowly getting worse. We have filled them with cold weld which works good but don't know how long it will hold. I love my stock pipes but I have always wanted to do something different eventually.

Nice looking work!  That's something you should be very proud of. :)

If you've got rotting-out exhaust I can see the need for alternatives, due to the price of a new stock system, but don't by any means think you'd be doing something different by putting on a 4-1 and pods.  If anything, that seems to be the norm now.  It looks like you currently have the stock air box and filter assembly.  You will never get it running as well as it probably does now if you put pods on it.

If you only need one new pipe, the cost will not be nearly as prohibitive.  Also, I've been running my '76 550K with "Muffler Mender" plugging a couple of holes for the past five years.  It's definitely not a permanent solution, but it can be a long-term temporary solution.

Its good to see a young man interested in these SOHC/4 Honda's. I had a 76 CB550 many years ago when I wasn't much older than you. Good looking bike you have. How about a little history on it and some before pictures. Welcome to the forum.

Welcome, and congratulations on your good taste in motorcycles!  +1 on the stock airbox -- you'll save yourself a lot of trouble and money by just installing a UNI replacement filter and leaving the rest alone.

If you do end up going with pods, make sure you get shorter ones.  On that bike, the pods for 1 and 4 have trouble fitting without hitting the frame.

If you want to get rid of your airbox lemme know...I've got the same bike and Im trying to get rid of my pods.  Tired of not being able to ride in the rain.

Thanks to all of you for your ideas and opinions this will help alot. So if I keep my stock air box, what exhaust systems do you all prefer? Sound, quality, looks and installing. I would like to keep my center stand. Ive been researching over night and found that the yoshi rep exhaust seems reasonable in price and quality. Any thoughts?    Here are a few more pictures of the bike when I got it on X-mas eve. Thanks for all of the kind words.

I'm going to say it again, do what you want to do with the bike (as of course you already are) but, assuming they look as good (or even almost as good) in person as they do in the photo and that you were planning to change the color, sell that tank and side panels as a group, take the money and buy a used tank that needs painting and repro side covers.

That color is much prized and I bet there are plenty of guys on the forum who would love to use them to restore their bike

Oh, and it looks like you are doing some very nice work there. Great job. It's always nice to see the current generation take an interest in older bikes like these.

The color isn't changing. We have the new paint, base coat, metal flakes, and clear coat. We bought it from Dtricks who recreates the older colors and we are staying with the flake sunrise orange.

Awsome. My personal favorite SOHC color. Get ready to attract a boatload of attention, especially if you combine that color with the stock exhaust.

I get compliments on my ugly brown metalic '77 with the original exhaust all the time.

Wow super sweet bike Orange. When my exahust goes I always thought of dind 4 into 2 exhaust using the stock header pipes and going with a Triumph Bullet style muffler on each side. Just a thought.

Orange Rider,

Hopefully this gets to you. I know this page hasn't been posted too in a long time. What exhaust did you decide to go with? My late fathers bike is this exact year and in dire need of a complete set. Just saw a NOS set on Ebay for it go for almost 1900. Can't really afford that so I'm looking around,

Thanks

I absolutely agree...KEEP HER STOCK!  Very nice work on the restoration!  However, IF you do change exhaust, I'm going NUTS trying to find an excellent condition number 4 pipe for my '74 CB550.  I've found all other cylinders BUT the one I need! I also got lucky on my 'find' as mine is also the Orange Flake color. I also own an '83 CB1000C and I've found the CB550 to be even smoother than the bigger brother!  You will TRULY enjoy that machine!
