cb550 oil pump leak
« on: August 30, 2006, 01:22:17 PM »
just checking...this seems like it would most obviously be the o-ring beneath the pump?? i'm wondering about the cover on the end of it though. the fiche shows no gasket or o-ring there, but there are 3 screws for its apparent removal. i have an old engine laying around, so i'll probably just open the extra up to see. there was a small leak coming from the sprocket/oil pump cover, but when i opened it oil DUMPED out, from where it had been slowly filling up the cavity in the cover for the pump. i ran it without the cover for a bit to check, and it's not gushing.

pulled the oil pump off today and replaced the seals (bought a bunch of random o-rings at a local seal suppier), and sure enough: there is an o-ring under the oil pump cover not shown in the diagram. anyway, i replaced the others so i guess i'll find out whether the last one is the culprit or not.

carry on...

Its usually the one under the top cover, Took me 5 hours at a "Hydraulic" manufacture to find one as it aint a standard. PS the supplier was a firm called DOWTY--Heard of them?
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

I have this collecting oil problem too.  The way it is happening i believe it is coming from the oil pump, but it is hard to see under the oil pump in the mm of space between it and the sprocket compartment.  Did this fix your problem?  what size was the O-ring?

I just (like the other day) did this repair. My bike had been leaking oil (kickstand/rear tire lubricator) since I bought it last year but it got real bad, so bad that I almost lost the bike on a left turn (left side of tire was covered with oil   >:(). The culprit was one of the small o-rings at the oil pump. I had a #$%* of a  ime getting the pump off- some one had used "locktite" on the bolts so I had to drill them and use bolt extractors. Long story short, I bought 2 little o-rings at Canadian Tire that looked close, new bolts and put it all back together. I've driven about 50km so far and she ain't dripping a single drop of oil  ;D. The kickstand and rear tire are startin' to squeek  ;D
Special thanks to Canadian tire for having the tools (extractors $5) and parts (O-rings and bolts $3).

can i do this without draining the oil?  I have been diagnosing oil issues lately and would like the dialysis to stop.  its spensive.  bryanj says he has oil pump o ring kits he has assembled for $10 shipped from the UK.  I am inclined to do this rather than the trial and error (emphasis on error) i will likely encounter at my local shop.  damn metrics.  thanks for the get back

Klark,

I didn't drain the oil. A little came out of the pump (obviously) so keep a catch pan underneath. It was less than 2 ounces spilled (but my oil was pretty low)  ::)

not so obvious, it could have been A LOT of oil  ;D.  you didn't have any oil light issues associated with the leak, did you?  I suspect i ave been diagnosing two issues at once, but if there is a connection with you too let me know...

Nope. Oil light never came on. Only when the engine is not running.

i won't really know for a bit if the seals i replaced were the culprits or if it was the one under the cover, as my bike will be down for the next week or so getting a new paint job. out of the four possible o-rings, it was the least flattened, so i hope not.

KK- i didn't drain the oil, just tried to be quick.
