Final drive oil seal replacement
« on: November 15, 2013, 05:32:31 PM »
Looks like it's going to be a bit of a challenge. I've searched for how-to's and only found a few tid-bits. Soooooooo, if anyone has done this (engine on bike) with enormous success, care to share your method? It looks like removal and install might both prove to be exciting. Any help appreciated.

I think it was andy750 who had a post about doing that. You may want to check with him...

Well here's how I did it. I bent a small hook in a stiff piece of wire, stuffed it through the inside of the seal, twisted the hook outward and gave it a tug. I figured I'd need 2 or 3 of them but one did it.

Can you feel any side wards play in the shaft? A seal may symptom of bearing play.

Hey Terry, how did it go? I usually drill a couple of 2" drywall screws one 180 degrees from the other and then pry it out.

Nice method. I'll be doing this soon. This looks like a nice alternative to inserting a screw to pull the seal. Thanks for posting.

No side play. The seal was 43 years old so it deserved a rest.

Here's how I put in the new seal. I used a large socket and pried it in against the case using a herking steel bar. It worked OK but I muffed the seal placement on the shaft. The seal lips were bent outwards. I pushed them back in with a small screwdriver but I'm betting the spring came off. Can't risk it so I'm going to buy a couple more and redo. For the next install, I think I'm going to make a tool. I have an idea for one and I'll post if it works. Meanwhile, here's how I did this one:

Well I ordered a new seal and meanwhile built this installation tool. Don't know how well it'll work but it should.
