1 More Ignition Switch Question, Please
« on: August 31, 2006, 11:36:57 AM »
What keeps the ignition switch from rotating in the bracket? This is my 1st Honda restoration in many years and I'm lost on the switch. Looking at the bracket and the switch, it looks like there is some keyed or special adapter/washer combination missing from my original. Mine did not have any washer and the good replacement I bought on EBay came without a washer. The fiche shows a washer is required, but I can't tell if it's keyed or has tabs on it. A picture speaks a 1000 words, anyone got one or can tell me what I should be looking for?

Oh yea, Honda no longer has that washer, I've tried twice to get one.

Thanks,
Gordon

The switch itself has a groove that corresponds to the tab on the bracket. I think the washer had a tab too, but it should not matter as the switch itself is already held captive from rotating, and that's the important part.

The bracket should have the little tab protruding into the hole for the switch.

See, this is where I got lost. Ny bracket has a recess (void) and nothing to grab into the the switch. The large washer that came with a new PartsNMore switch I purchased (but won't use) is a flat, round washer with no tab. I am again with no visable means of holding the cylinder in-place except the clamp-load of the outter nut piece that hold the switch to the bracket.

Thanks for the inputs.

Okay, here is the deal-io.  Being a noob on this board, I wanted to check my bike and be sure before I posted.

Having just gone through this procedure to move the switch back to it's original and rightful location under the tank (PO had mounted the switch up by the instrument panel), I was thinking it was a tabbed washer.

Just checked my '76K - indeed it is a tabbed washer - on my bike at least.  The washer has two tabs, one goes in the "female" tab for the mounting bracket.  The other locks into the recess on the ignition switch itself.

I got an original mounting bracket off ebay from a '74 (IIRC).  I guess I was lucky because mine came with the ignition switch, mounting screw, key, and... the tabbed washer.

Check ebay, I'm sure you can find one.  You may have to buy the switch in order to get the tabbed washer.  I have a picked up a lot of "extra" parts this way.   ;D

Cheers!

Hey, thanks. I hought there had to be a keyed washer, but I've got 4 switches now and none have one.

I'll get busy finding one.

Again, thanks.

If you can't find one, a plain old carefully fitted lock washer may fit the bill.    :-\
