CB500 Leaking Carb Bowls
« on: July 03, 2014, 12:17:00 PM »
Hi guys,

Recently rebuilt my carbs on my '73 CB500. Got the carbs back on the bike and everything was looking good, no leaks. After a few days of the bike sitting while working on clutch, turn the petcock on and carbs are leaking big time from the tops of the bowls. I tapped the bowls thinking the floats were stuck but no luck.

I pulled the bowls to find the gaskets were "wavy" in a few places. I would assume that although "wavy" off the bike, when pressed down they should seal, but maybe not.

As you can probably tell, I used superglue in the corners to help install.

My question is, do you think I could let seals dry out and then glue down the areas in which the deal is flaring up? Or should I just order new shaped seals?

Thoughts/experiences or help would be greatly appreciated

I can see superglue on the gasket surface where it meets the body.  Rubber will seal up against the body, superglue will not.  Also looks like they have a "swell" issue.  Even the OEM gaskets are too large, add to that the poorly fitting aftermarket versions.

Your should double check your float height and that your valves are functioning correcly, your fuel level should be below that line.  Or search for clear tube method.

I started making my own out of Viton cord stock to the CORRECT size.  No swell, and superior to any other substance.

Thanks harisuluv, that's what I was thinking too.  I will check the float level also

Do you sell your Viton cord rings?

I was looking at 4into1.com and they are sold out of the shaped rings so I could use some rings :)
