DynaS electronic ignition?
« on: September 03, 2006, 10:57:26 AM »
Hi everybody, glad I found you! while gathering parts for a CB 350, I came across a '75 CB 750 Four I just couldn't resist!
It was running ok at first, but after one week i am getting hesitation at about 6k rpm...
My first thought was that instead of messing around with coils, condenser and points, I should just eliminate all that by getting the reasonably priced DynaS electronic ignition with the matching DynaS coils.
My question, has anybody here installed this unit, and how is it working for you? And if it isn't a reliable unit, is there one anybody could recommend to replace the points?
Thanks for any advice, and good to meet you all.

A quick search of the forum will turn up many threads on this one.

Summary:  You can't go wrong with a Dyna.

Myself, I went with the Boyer 'cause I liked the idea of an electronic advance.  It's working quite well with the stock coils.

points in my 550 k dont start to breaking down till it hits 10k rpm's ( well into the red) and when they need replacing i'll take the 40 dollar hit instead of the 130 dollar hit ;) for the electronic igntion. just my 2 cents :D
Its all happening !

I just asked this a while back and just did the conversion to dyna yesterday.
I just did the maiden dyna ride today, about 40 miles are so and I really like the results.
Cold start is better and warm up seems quicker.

Conversion is easy, and I set mine by a timing light to the advance mark as
the directions state. Follow the directions and you can't go wrong.

Local friend got mine for me at $115.

Oh yea, I'm still using the stock coils.

I put the Dyna S on my 500 earlier this year and never looked back.
So easy to do, it practically installed itself.
I just picked up a CB400 with a Dyna III installed, which looks a bit nicer
and has an external triggr box, but the "S" is still a great choice!

Moto,

I have installed both the Dyna S ignition and green 3 ohm Dyna coils on my 1972 CB750 and they are trouble free and low to no maintenance.

I too have installed the Dyna.  I have a '74 CB750 K4.  It has been several years now and it has performed completely flawless.

Never any trouble, starts easier, and I believe I do get better gas mileage (Yeah Baby)!!

     Maintenance?...........I don't need no stinkin' maintenance! 8) 8)

I installed a Dyna III & coils back in 80's. Still going strong and haven't touched it since. No replacing points and  condensors or setting timing and dwell. Never was good at that anyway. Best $$ I spent on my bike and I've spent plenty.

From what i have read of the Dyna S ignition im seriously leaning towards installing it on my K4 as well after i get a few miles of riding out of the bike. from the looks of the set up you just pull the points and their backing plate then replace them with the dyna s parts right? from what i read it uses the original advancer or something like that?

The Dyna S just replaces the points plate.  You have to remoive the points cam, and replace it with the new pickup for the Dyna.  It is very easy to do.  The instructions are clear.  There are three wires to connect.  The two "points" wires are color coded to match the original, and then you need to connect the power wire to a switched 12 volt source.  I used the wire which supplies power to the coils.  Then just set the timing, cover it and go!

PIA job on my 400 had to replace the ATU it had the wrong size rotor (UKspec) and get the hangers machined to for the Dyna coil cores to fit; the Dyna plug caps are also gone for NGK items

I too am looking to do the switch but I have heard that 3ohm coils work best with the dyna s ignition (no problem, I want new coils anyways), but that 3 ohm coils are fine for 750s but do not work well with the 550's charging system at low speeds, like city driving (problem).  Anyone able to comment on this?
